A stage name is a name an entertainer (such as a movie star or a musician) uses instead of their birth name for the purposes of their career. Famous examples include actress Marilyn Monroe, singer Lady Gaga and rapper Nicki Minaj.
Actors and actresses choose stage names for a variety of reasons. Their real name may be too similar to that of another famous person, or may be difficult to say or spell. They may also choose a more memorable name in place of their birth name. Professional wrestlers also use stage names, though they are called "ring names" within wrestling.
