The Ackawaio Stefania (Stefania ackawaio) is a frog. It lives in Guyana.

Home

This frog lives in forests high on the tepui land. People see them sitting on plants 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in – 9 ft 10 in) above the ground. Scientists first found the frog on Mount Ayanganna. Later, they also found it on Mount Wokomung. They found the frog between 1,234 and 1,550 m (4,049 and 5,085 ft) above sea level. They only found the frogs at night.

Young

The female frogs carry their eggs on their backs. The eggs hatch into small froglets, not swimming tadpoles.

Danger

Scientists from the IUCN say this frog is in some danger of dying out. It lives in places that human beings do not visit or change much, but people do dig in the ground for gold on Mount Agayanna. Right now, they do not do this on the part of the mountain where the frogs live, but the frogs could be hurt if that changed. Many animals that live near the tops of tepui highlands are in danger from climate change because it can change the water in the air and the plants and because they cannot climb higher to a cooler place if their homes become too hot or dry.
