Strontium carbonate

Strontium carbonate powder

Strontium carbonate is a compound when strontium oxide reacts with carbon dioxide, and it is made of strontium and carbonate ions with the chemical formula SrCO3. It appears as a white or gray powder. It is found in the mineral strontianite. It is a weak base, which means it reacts with acids to make strontium salts. It is usually insoluble with water but increases if more carbon dioxide is added to water.

Reaction with acids

When strontium carbonate reacts with an acid, it makes a strontium salt, water, and carbon dioxide. For example, it reacts with hydrochloric acid to make strontium chloride (a salt), water, and carbon dioxide.

The balanced chemical equation of the reaction is:

SrCO3 + 2HCl → SrCl2 + H2O + CO2
