Ultraman (DC Comics)

Ultraman is a character from DC Comics that is an alternate version of Superman.

Publication history

He first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #75 in 1968.

Fictional character biography

In this alternate universe, Ultraman is part of the Crime Syndicate of America, a villainous counterpart to the Justice League.

His origin story differs from Superman’s; Ultraman hails from a parallel universe known as Earth-3, where he was raised by a family that instilled in him a belief in power above all else.

Powers and abilities

While he shares many of the same powers as Superman, such as super strength, flight, and heat vision, Ultraman has darker tendencies and is depicted as a ruthless and power-hungry figure.

Ultraman's abilities are often fueled by exposure to kryptonite, but unlike Superman, he draws power from the green kryptonite that weakens him in the original Superman comics. He is a prominent member of the Crime Syndicate, which includes other evil counterparts of Justice League members, like Owlman (Batman), Superwoman (Wonder Woman), and Johnny Quick (The Flash).

Themes

Throughout various storylines, Ultraman typically serves as a formidable antagonist to the heroes of the DC Universe, embodying themes of tyranny and the corruption of power.

In other media

He has been portrayed in live-action by Tom Welling on the television series Smallville and by David Corenswet in the 2025 movie Superman.
