Waif

A waif is a term historically used to describe a person, often a child, who appears homeless, abandoned, or neglected. The word can also refer more broadly to something lost, unclaimed, or without an apparent owner. Over time, waif has acquired various social, literary, and artistic connotations, ranging from legal terminology in medieval England to symbolic portrayals of innocence and vulnerability in art and literature.
