Fictional character biography

Born in the late 1800s, James Howlett is the son of rich Canadian plantation owners John and Elizabeth Howlett. One night, their drunken groundskeeper named Thomas Logan decided to rob the Howletts at gunpoint. During the confrontation, Thomas shoots John and kills him, which awakens James' mutant gene, causing bone claws to slide out from his knuckles. In a rage, James kills Thomas with his claws, but it turns out that Thomas was James' actual father, who had been having an affair with his mother, Elizabeth. Following this, Logan escaped from home, drifting through the Canadian wilderness.

James finds a new life as a coal miner in a mining town with his caretaker, Rose, and grows up alongside his fellow coal miners, who nickname him "The Wolverine" because of his aggressive mining style. During their time in the village, Rose gives James the alias "Logan" to protect him. However, Thomas Logan's other son, Dog, tracks down the pair and a brutal fight ensues. During it, Logan accidentally kills Rose, impaling her on his bone claws. Distraught, the man flees into the wilderness once again.

Over the course of several decades, Logan drifts from place to place. His mutant healing factor lets him live much longer than ordinary people, so he is able to fight in conflicts around the world. Eventually, Logan is kidnapped by a mysterious organisation named the Weapon X Program. Their scientists wanted to turn a person into the ultimate weapon to do their bidding, and knew Logan was the person they needed. During a very painful surgery, the scientists bond the metal Adamantium to his bones, strengthening his skeleton and coating his bone claws into sharp, machete-like blades. In a fit of rage, Logan escapes the facility and kills everyone who gets in his way. With his mind now wiped, not knowing of his past, the Weapon X surgery, or even his own name, Logan wanders the wilderness once again, drifting about for purpose.

Logan finds purpose when he is brought in by James and Heather Hudson, who help heal his broken mind, restoring his conciousness, but not recover his memories. The couple introduce Logan to the Canadian ministry of defense, and out of appreciation for James and Heather's good deeds towards him, Logan agrees to join the agency as a black ops agent.

Later, the Incredible Hulk crossed into Canadian territory to fight a monster, and the Canadian ministry of defense deployed Logan against Hulk, as the Wolverine. Some time after this, Professor X used his powerful mind abilities to sneak into the facility Logan resided in, and offered him a place on the X-Men. Bitter about being used as a weapon by the Canadian government, Logan immediately accepted, and left with Professor X for America.

There, Logan would join the new X-Men team alongside Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. He would finally learn to do good with his abilities and embarked on a mission of self-improvement, to take back his own memories and reclaim his life not just as Wolverine, but Logan.

Powers

Wolverine possesses many different powers. From between his knuckles, he can extend long, sharp blades out and use them as weapons. Wolverine also has a very powerful healing factor, which almost makes him immortal. His skeleton is reinforced with adamantium, a fictional metal that is one of the strongest on Earth. Wolverine also ages very slowly, being around 200 years old in the modern comics timeline.

In other media

Wolverine has adapted to many different forms of media, including toys, movies, television series, and video games. In the movies, Wolverine has been portrayed by Hugh Jackman from 2000 to 2024. He is expected to return for future movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
