Bruce Ing

Bruce Ing (* 1. September 1937 in London) ist ein britischer Mykologe. Sein Spezialgebiet sind die Myxomyceten (Schleimpilze). Außerdem untersucht er phytoparasitische Pilze (Mehltaue, Rost- und Brandpilze) und engagiert sich im Naturschutz. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „Ing“.

Wirken

Bruce Ing besuchte in London die Schule (City of London School) und studierte ab 1957 an den Universitäten Cambridge, St Andrews und Liverpool. Ab der ersten Studienwoche spezialisierte er sich auf das Fachgebiet der Myxomyceten. 1979 promovierte er in Liverpool zu ökologischen Studien an Myxomyceten. Ing stand in regelmäßigem Kontakt mit George W. Martin und Constantine J. Alexopoulos und arbeitete später mit Elly Nannenga-Bremekamp zusammen.

1960 trat Ing der British Mycological Society (BMS) bei. Von 1960 bis 1964 organisierte er mit Freiwilligen das Management von Naturschutzgebieten.

Zwischen 1964 und 1967 leitete er das Kindrogan Field Centre, das erste Zentrum für Feldstudien in Schottland, unterrichtete Ökologie an Schulen und Universitäten und organisierte Spezialkurse für Naturforscher, darunter einen jährlichen Pilzworkshop.

Im Jahr 1967 wurde Ing Bezirksnaturschutzbeauftragter für Hertfordshire und Middlesex, als erster dieser Art im Vereinigten Königreich. In dieser Position war er Fachlehrer für ländliche Entwicklung und Leiter des Chorleywood Field Centre. Dabei beriet er Schulen, bildete Lehrkräfte fort und leitete Kurse für Grundschulkinder, größtenteils aus dem Londoner Umland.

Von 1971 bis 2013 war Bruce Ing Dozent für Biologie an der University of Chester, ab 1994 in Teilzeit. 1999 wurde er zum Professor für Umweltbiologie ernannt und 2013, mit Eintritt in den Ruhestand, zum emeritierten Professor für Angewandte Wissenschaften.

Bruce Ing war zwischen 1988 und 1995 als Vertreter des Vereinigten Königreichs Mitglied des Europäischen Rates für die Erhaltung der Pilze und von 1992 bis 1995 dessen Präsident. 1993 organisierte er in Chester den ersten Internationalen Kongress zur Systematik und Ökologie der Myxomyceten.

In der BMS war Ing Vorstandsmitglied (1987–1989), Mitglied des Jubiläumskomitees, Exkursionssekretär (zuständig für die Organisation von Exkursionen und einigen Konferenzen), Naturschutzberater (in zwei Amtszeiten) und Vizepräsident. Für seine Verdienste um die Mykologie wurde ihm 1994 die Benefactors’ Medal (Wohltätermedaille) der Gesellschaft verliehen. In der Vereinigung nahm er regelmäßig an Exkursionen und Treffen teil, auch in Übersee; einige davon hat er selbst organisiert.

Bruce Ing hat Frischmaterial von 50 Ländern auf sechs Kontinenten gesammelt oder bearbeitet. Sein Herbarium geht an den Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Sonstiges

Bruce Ing ist verheiratet. Er lebte in London, Schottland, Hertfordshire, Mold (Wales) und wohnt seit 2010 in den nördlichen Highlands.
