Ah Biao (Chinese: 阿标; born 1990) is a Chinese film director, screenwriter and cinematographer based in Bangkok. His first feature, Border (Chinese: 边境; also Bian jing), premiered in competition at the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize.

Early life

Ah Biao was born in 1990 in Shanxi. Europa Press gives the birthplace as Datong. He lives in Bangkok.

He worked as a camera operator for about ten years before directing Border. He told Europa Press that working alongside other filmmakers had given him a perspective on cinema and led him to make his own film. The reports do not name the films he shot during those years.

Border

Border is Ah Biao's first feature. He wrote and directed it and was the cinematographer. The film runs 78 minutes, in Mandarin and Mongolian, and stars Zheyan Li, Feng Qi, Han Sanming, Gang Zheng and Tao Guo. The festival catalogue lists the countries of production as Hong Kong, the United States and South Korea. Variety describes it as a Hong Kong–United States–South Korea–Japan co-production. Paris-based Reel Suspects handles worldwide sales.

The film was shot in northern China and near Mongolia. At the San Sebastián press conference, Ah Biao said he wanted to reflect emotions rather than tell a closed story, and that the script grew out of news reports and social cases he had followed. He described the title as the divisions between people, rather than a geographic border, and said the story could have been set somewhere else. He also said the film is not realist, but that it uses sounds recorded from real life.

Border premiered in the official competition of the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Shell alongside films by Mike Leigh and Pablo Larraín. On 26 September 2026 it received the Special Jury Prize. The festival quoted the jury: the film is "bold in both cinematic form and sexual explicitness" and "in the confidence of its vision reveals a major new voice in world cinema."
