Christopher Churcher (born 2004) is a British composer.
Churcher was born in Birmingham, where he began composing around the age of eleven. He sang as a chorister in Birmingham Cathedral[disambiguation needed] Choir and attended the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he studied piano and composition.
Churcher read music at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, while singing as a choral scholar with the Choir of Somerville College. He graduated with first-class honours in 2026.
Churcher first rose to prominence in 2021 when he won the under-18 category of The Bach Choir's Sir David Willcocks Carol Competition with a setting of Emily Dickinson titled Before the Ice is in the Pools. The Bach Choir performed it at Cadogan Hall. The following year, he was named the winner of the National Centre for Early Music's Young Composers Award for Arborescent, a string quartet that translates the image of a tree into musical form.
In 2023, Churcher won the inaugural Musica Viva Composition Competition for an orchestral overture titled Breakwater, which was premiered by the Southbank Sinfonia in Plymouth in 2023. Seen and Heard International praised its wide dynamic range and prominent brass writing. The piece was later revised and retitled Egress, premiered by the CBSO Youth Orchestra at Birmingham Town Hall in July 2025.
In 2024, Iain Burnside commissioned Churcher's first song cycle, Skysongs, for soprano Harriet Burns and pianist Ian Tindale. The cycle sets poems by Ursula K. Le Guin, Alice Oswald and Sara Teasdale and received its premiere recording on the duo's 2025 Delphian album A Short Story of Falling. That same year, Anna Lapwood recorded Churcher's organ prelude This Shining Night for Sony Classical.
Churcher's time at Oxford was defined in large part by his collaboration with the Choir of Somerville College under its director, Will Dawes. In 2025 the choir recorded his debut album, Moonrise, for Resonus Classics, with Dawes conducting and Mar Umbert Kimura at the piano. Released on 8 May 2026, the album met with praise: BBC Radio 3's Essential Classics named it their Album of the Week, and Choir & Organ magazine gave it a five-star review, praising Churcher's "extraordinarily assured, confident writing".
Churcher's music is influenced by the natural world. Musically, his work has been praised by Robert Hugill for its use of dissonance, while Ken Walton, writing in The Scotsman, has noted his use of "shimmering" textures and atmospheres.
Churcher has cited American post-minimalist composers John Adams, Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly and Timo Andres as key influences.
