FODE symposium

Location of organisation and people represented at Fodes 2026

FODE (Fully Online Distance Education) Symposium is a virtual event organised by Pretoria University. The conference is intended for those who design and develop online distance education modules and / or short courses. Launched in October 2021, in the middle of the covid pandemic, FODES offered a model to those in Higher Education, of how platforms might introduce alternative modes (online, in person, blended or virtual) for conferences, and perhaps education. Online platforms have been used for teaching and learning, in VUCA times , when campus is not accessible to all students. FODES offers the opportunity to consider the value of space and place when an academic conference is located at the periphery.

Platformatisation

Digital infrustructures have been adopted at scale in many higher education instiutions in the global south and the platform economy and its logics have reshaped physical classes and inter student communication, without clear examiniation of long term consequences. Mass digitalisation has led to disimprovement, platform decay or to use the german oxymoron, "verschlimmbesserung".
