Gavriel Gilad "Gabi" Kanichowsky (Hebrew: גבריאל גלעד "גבי" קניקובסקי; born 24 August 1997) is an Israeli professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Israeli Premier League club Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Israel national team.
Kanichowsky developed in the youth systems of Hapoel Ra'anana and Maccabi Tel Aviv. After loan spells at Hapoel Petah Tikva and Hapoel Acre, he joined Maccabi Netanya in 2018. He returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2021, winning two league championships, before joining Ferencváros in 2025. Following a Hungarian Cup-winning spell with the club, he returned to Maccabi in 2026.
Kanichowsky was born in Ra'anana, Israel, to parents who had immigrated from South Africa. He attended a Bnei Akiva yeshiva in the city and grew up playing football in a framework that did not hold matches on Shabbat.
An observant Jew, he has described the arrangements required to combine professional football with observing Shabbat, including staying within walking distance of stadiums before matches. He is married to Dana.
Kanichowsky began playing youth football with Hapoel Ra'anana before joining Maccabi Tel Aviv's academy in 2014. Over two seasons, he scored four goals in 76 appearances for Maccabi's under-19 side, including a goal against Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Youth League.
He made his senior debut for Maccabi on 28 October 2015 in a Toto Cup match against Bnei Yehuda. It was his only first-team appearance during his initial spell at the club.
Kanichowsky spent the 2016–17 season on loan at Hapoel Petah Tikva in Liga Leumit, Israel's second division. He made his league debut for the club on 22 August 2016 in a goalless home draw against Maccabi Netanya. He finished the season with four goals in 36 league appearances.
For the 2017–18 season, he joined Hapoel Acre on loan and scored six goals in 33 Israeli Premier League appearances. Acre subsequently acquired him permanently before his transfer to Maccabi Netanya.
On 25 July 2018, Kanichowsky signed a three-year contract with Maccabi Netanya.
In his first season, he helped Netanya reach the Israel State Cup final. The final against Bnei Yehuda on 15 May 2019 ended 1–1 after extra time, and Netanya lost the penalty shoot-out 5–4. Kanichowsky's fifth penalty was saved.
Kanichowsky scored three league goals in each of his first two seasons at Netanya. In 2020–21, he increased his tally to nine goals in 32 league appearances. Across his time at the club, he made 92 league appearances and scored 15 goals.
On 31 August 2021, Kanichowsky returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv on a three-year contract with an option for a further season. The agreement between the clubs also included Eden Karzev's transfer to Maccabi Netanya.
He scored his first senior goal for Maccabi on 14 September 2021 in a 4–1 home win over Alashkert in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage. He also scored twice in Maccabi's 5–0 away victory over HJK Helsinki during the same group-stage campaign.
Kanichowsky scored nine league goals in 2023–24 as Maccabi won the championship, and was part of the side that retained the title in 2024–25.
During his four-season spell, he made 194 appearances in all competitions, scoring 27 goals and providing 46 assists, according to the club. He won two league championships, two Toto Cups and the Israel Super Cup.
On 23 July 2025, Ferencváros announced Kanichowsky's signing. He made his competitive debut on 2 August against Kazincbarcika in the Hungarian league and scored his first goal for the club in the same match.
He scored five goals in 28 league appearances during the 2025–26 season. In Europe, he helped Ferencváros reach the Europa League round of 16 and scored against Ludogorets and Braga during the campaign.
On 9 May 2026, Kanichowsky started in the Hungarian Cup final as Ferencváros defeated Zalaegerszeg 1–0 after extra time at the Puskás Aréna.
He began the 2026–27 season with Ferencváros, making three further league appearances before leaving the club in August.
On 31 August 2026, Maccabi Tel Aviv announced an agreement with Ferencváros for Kanichowsky's return on a four-year contract. He resumed wearing the number 16 shirt. The signing was formally confirmed on 2 September.
Kanichowsky represented Israel at under-19 and under-21 levels, making four appearances for the former and eleven for the latter.
He received a senior international call-up in November 2019, when he was added to Israel's squad following Taleb Tawatha's withdrawal through injury.
He made his senior debut on 26 March 2022 in a 2–0 friendly defeat against Germany.
On 12 September 2023, he scored his first senior international goal, an injury-time winner in Israel's 1–0 victory over Belarus at Bloomfield Stadium in UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying.
