Gate.com, formerly known as Gate.io, is a cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2013 by Lin Han. It offers spot and derivatives trading and operates through regional entities licensed in several jurisdictions. The exchange has faced criticism over the late disclosure of a 2018 security breach and, in Chile, over its response to court orders relating to stolen funds.
The exchange began operating in 2013 and was previously known as Bter.com. After China restricted cryptocurrency trading in 2017, it moved its operations outside mainland China.
In April 2018, the exchange suffered a security breach in which, according to reporting in 2022, about US$230 million in cryptocurrency was stolen. The breach was not publicly disclosed at the time; it became widely known in November 2022 after the blockchain investigator ZachXBT published details of it. The exchange responded that its platform had strong security mechanisms.
In 2021, the company launched Gate Ventures, a venture capital arm investing in early-stage blockchain projects. In May 2023, the price of its token, GateToken (GT), fell after rumours about the exchange's finances, which the company denied. Bloomberg News estimated the assets held on the exchange at the time at US$1.88 billion. In 2025, the company adopted the Gate.com name.
Gate.com is a centralized exchange offering spot trading, margin trading and perpetual futures. Its native token, GateToken (GT), launched in 2019 and is used for trading fees and other platform functions.
Gate operates through regional subsidiaries. In Europe, it holds a Class 4 Virtual Financial Assets licence from the Malta Financial Services Authority. In Hong Kong, its subsidiary Hippo Financial Services launched the Gate.HK platform in 2023.
In May 2023, funds stolen from the Chilean company Local Traders SpA in a cyberattack were traced to wallet addresses associated with the exchange. According to BioBioChile, a Santiago court issued several orders to the exchange, including a February 2025 order to return the assets, with which the company did not comply. In May 2026, Chile's Financial Market Commission (CMF) issued an investor alert stating that Gate.com and several affiliated entities were not authorised to provide financial services in Chile.
