Production

In an interview with Cineuropa, director Alina Șerban shared that I Matter was inspired by her personal experiences and five years of research. She directed a short film of the same name in 2021 and also created documentaries about young Romani people. With the film, Șerban aimed to "show the humanity" of Romani people and celebrate the community.

Șerban participated at the MFI Film LAB at the Mediterranean Film Institute Script 2 Film Workshops to develop the film script in June 2023. The project participated at the AGORA Co-Production Forum, held during the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November 2023. It was awarded with the ArteKino International Award and received €6,000 grant. In December 2023, the project was presented at the Les Arcs Co-Production Village, held during the Les Arcs Film Festival. In June 2025, it was reported that the production received support from the Wallonia-Brussels Film and Audiovisual Centre.
