Meat Promotion Wales (Welsh: Hybu Cig Cymru; HCC) is a Welsh Government sponsored body, which was established in 2003. It promotes the red meat sector and markets the Protected Geographical Indication Welsh Beef and Welsh Lamb brands.
In 2024, concerns surfaced about alleged bullying behaviour by a manager and an external investigation upheld several complaints against an individual working for HCC, leading the organisation to indicate that Mr Howells "will not be undertaking his duties for a period of time" due to "a period of sickness absence".
It is appropriate that Welsh Government's arms-length bodies are reviewed periodically to ensure they are still necessary and if so, they continue to provide good value for money. HCC was created in 2003 and was reconstituted in 2007, when it became a company limited by guarantee, wholly owned by the Welsh Ministers.
Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) was established in 2003 as the body responsible for the strategic development, promotion and marketing of Welsh red meat. HCC works in dynamic and proactive partnerships with farmers, auction markets, processors, retailers, industry bodies and government bodies to boost productivity, profitability and sustainability.
HCC has a legal responsibility to act as guardians of the PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef designations and in order to fulfil its responsibilities and to ensure that the integrity of the designations is protected, HCC has implemented a verification scheme for abattoirs and cutting plants.
Six members of staff complained separately about bullying behaviour by a manager and an external investigation upheld several complaints against the individual concerned, according to Newyddion S4C. ... Hybu Cig Cymru said Mr Howells "will not be undertaking his duties for a period of time" due to "a period of sickness absence".
