The Nigerian Foreign Service Academy (NFSA) is a diplomatic training academy under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The academy's responsibility is to train, orient and build capacity of officers of the Nigerian Foreign Service and other public servants engaged in international relations and diplomacy.

It is the primary academy of the Nigerian government for training its diplomatic officers for posting at embassies, high commissions, consulates and multilateral missions.

History

In 1982, the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy was established as part of the efforts to build up the strength of the diplomatic corps of Nigeria and to improve the training of foreign service officers through continuous in-service training.

The establishment of the academy was a result of the growing diplomatic involvement and complexity of global diplomacy in Nigeria, which included economic diplomacy, multilateral diplomacy, peace keeping and regional integration.

The academy has been conducting periodic training courses for diplomats entering the Nigerian foreign service over the years, such as the "Regular Course" programmes that are conducted regularly for newly recruited officers before they are deployed abroad.

Mandate and objectives

The mandate of the academy is to offer professional training and education to Nigeria's foreign service officers. It has the following main aims:

The academy contributes to Nigeria's overall foreign policy objectives by building capacity in the diplomatic service through these functions.

Training programmes

The academy organizes regular training courses for new recruits to the Nigerian Foreign Service, and special courses for the enhancement of diplomatic skills. These programmes involve training on diplomatic protocol, consular administration, international relations, negotiation and Nigeria's foreign policy agenda.

The academy's Regular Courses are occasionally reported in the Nigerian media for graduation. For instance, during one of the regular training cycles of the academy, more than 100 diplomats graduated with the academy's officials exhorting the graduates to promote Nigeria's national interest in their diplomatic assignments.

The 26th Regular Course of the academy was inaugurated in 2025, highlighting the values of discipline, professionalism and excellence among the new entrants into the diplomatic service of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Institutional structure

The Nigerian Foreign Service Academy is an institution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is led by a Director appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The academy is closely linked with the Nigerian missions in foreign countries and government institutions that are engaged in the implementation of foreign policy.

Nigeria's media reports have said the academy's leadership is dedicated to producing diplomats who will put Nigeria's national interest first in international engagements.
