He was a Central Committee member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) between January 15, 1990 and September 22, 1991. As of early 1992 he was the convenor of Preparatory Committee for the National Conference, Communist Party of Nepal. He was a central member of the Tharu Welfare Committee until 1993, and was a member of the editorial board of the Tharu Sanskriti Parivar and an advisory member of the Nepal Janajati Mahasangh. Per Chaudhury, the former king held some 80,000 ropanis of land, far above the legal limit of individual land holdings.

Around October 2006 Chaudhury resigned from his post as party chairman, as the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist) went through a period of internal conflict. During the constitution-writing process after the fall of the monarchy, Chaudhury advocated for the creation of Gandaki, Koshi and Karnali states.
