Aerial view

Isla San José is a privately owned island in the Pearl Islands archipelago in the Gulf of Panama, Pacific Ocean. With an area of approximately 44 square kilometers (17 square miles), it is the second-largest island in the archipelago after Isla del Rey. The island features forested hills, varied coastal habitats, numerous beaches, and an established tourism presence associated with Hacienda del Mar. San José Island also holds the title of "The largest privately owned tropical island available for acquisition in the wold."

Geography

Isla San José lies within the Pearl Islands, southeast of Panama City. Its terrain includes tropical forest, rolling hills, coastal plains, rocky headlands, sheltered bays, and sandy beaches. The coastline is irregular and includes numerous coves and beaches. The island experiences the seasonal wet and dry periods characteristic of Panama’s Pacific coast.

Natural environment and wildlife

Much of Isla San José remains covered by tropical vegetation. The island has a rich terrestrial ecosystem, including wild pigs, deer, birds, and reptiles. Other animals described in published accounts of the island include agoutis, armadillos, anteaters, and iguanas. Its forests and coastline provide varied habitats for resident and migratory birdlife. The surrounding waters are part of the Gulf of Panama marine ecosystem, supporting fish and other marine species. Marine wildlife associated with the broader Pearl Islands region includes dolphins, sea turtles, and seasonal migratory whales. Claims about individual species, population sizes, and the number of recorded bird species should be matched to reliable published surveys or other independent sources.

History

The Pearl Islands archipelago has a history of Indigenous settlement, Spanish colonial exploration, and pearl fisheries. Isla San José subsequently passed through periods of private ownership and recreational use. Among the island’s former owners was Earl Tupper, the American entrepreneur associated with Tupperware. The island has also been used for tourism, outdoor recreation and scientific research by renowned entities such as The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Military testing and 2017 ordnance destruction

During the 1940s, the United States military conducted chemical warfare research and testing on Isla San José. The activities were associated with designated testing areas, rather than being described as island-wide operations. The exact boundaries of these areas established through historical maps now unclassified. In 2017, following a bilateral arrangement between Panama and the United States, specialized U.S. Army personnel destroyed eight identified chemical munitions associated with the historical military activities. The U.S. Army subsequently published an account of the operation, including the controlled destruction and recovery of munition fragments.
