Biography

Jindal was born in Tinsukia, Assam in a Hindu Marwari family. She married Om Prakash Jindal in the 1966, who had founded the Jindal Group, a steel and power conglomerate.

The revenue of the company quadrupled after she took charge of the company after her husband's death in a helicopter crash. Each of the four divisions of her business is run by her four sons, Prithviraj, Sajjan Jindal, Ratan Jindal and Naveen Jindal. Jindal Steel is the currently the third-largest producer of steel in India.

Savitri Jindal has served as a Cabinet Minister and Minister of State in the Government of Haryana and has served as a Member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from the Hisar constituency multiple times. She lost her constituency seat in elections held in 2014, but was re-elected in 2024.

She became the chairperson of the group after her husband, Om Prakash Jindal, died in a helicopter crash in 2005. She is currently an independent MLA serving in the Haryana Legislative Assembly from the same constituency. She has previously held membership from both the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Jindal is currently considered the richest woman in India as of 3 March 2024, and the 50th richest person in the world. She is the world's seventh-richest mother and continues to contribute to the entrepreneurial legacy that her husband started. She was conferred with Acharya Tulsi Kartritva Puraskar in 2008 by Akhil Bhartiya Terapanth Mahila Mandal (ABTMM), a socio-religious NGO.

Political life

In 2005, Jindal was first elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly from the Hisar constituency in a by-election, which was earlier represented by her husband, Om Prakash Jindal, before he passed away. During this term she served as the Minister of State for Revenue, Disaster Management, Rehabilitation and Housing in the Government of Haryana. In 2009, she was re-elected to the same constituency and then served as the Cabinet Minister for Urban Local Bodies and Housing of Haryana.

In March 2024, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 Indian general election. Her son, Naveen Jindal, won the 2024 Indian general election from the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency under the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In October 2024, she contested the Haryana Legislative Assembly elections as an independent candidate from her usual seat of Hisar and won.
