18S rRNA (guanine-N(7))-methyltransferase is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the BUD23 gene (previously WBSCR22). This enzyme is involved in the production of the 40S ribosomal subunit, and is a coactivator for multiple steroid receptors (NR3C1-4).
This gene encodes a protein containing a nuclear localization signal and an S-adenosyl-L-methionine binding motif typical of methyltransferases, suggesting that the encoded protein may act on DNA methylation. This gene is deleted in Williams syndrome, a multisystem developmental disorder caused by the deletion of contiguous genes at 7q11.23.
This gene is an ortholog of a gene found in baker's yeast whose protein is involved in bud positioning and has been called "Bud site selection protein 23", hence BUD23.
