Trama
La serie racconta la storia di dieci persone che si svegliano su un'isola deserta senza alcun ricordo di chi sono o di come sono arrivati lì, e si mettono all’opera per cercare di tornare a casa. Scoprono presto però che questo mondo in cui si trovano non è come sembra. Di fronte alle sfide psicologiche e fisiche estreme dell'isola, devono dare il meglio di sé per sopravvivere e per non morire.

Accoglienza
Il sito aggregatore di recensioni Rotten Tomatoes ha riportato un indice di gradimento dell'8% con una valutazione media di 3/10, sulla base di 12 recensioni. Sul sito, il consenso della critica recita: "Sconcertantemente brutto, l'unico mistero è come The I-Land sia stato realizzato in primo luogo". Metacritic, che utilizza una media ponderata, ha assegnato alla serie un punteggio di 7 su 100, sulla base di 4 critici, indicando un "dislike schiacciante".
Tim Surette, scrivendo per TV Guide, ha assegnato alla miniserie una valutazione di 0,5/5, riassumendo che "è una serie limitata mystery box di sette episodi incredibilmente stupida riguardo 10 persone che si svegliano su un'isola tropicale deserta senza ricordare chi siano o come ci siano arrivate. Ma questo espediente narrativo centrale viene rapidamente risolto nel terzo episodio, mentre The I-Land va completamente fuori controllo, si ribalta e si avvolge attorno a una storia completamente nuova e altrettanto stupida".
Scrivendo per The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Fienberg ha paragonato la miniserie alla serie Lost, "solo con una fondamentale incomprensione di come Lost abbia gestito lo sviluppo dei personaggi, la mitologia, la struttura dei flashback, i temi e la costruzione dell'ensemble". Ha inoltre scritto che "nessun aspetto di The I-Land funziona, e ogni aspetto negativo si basa su quelli precedenti in un modo che rende piuttosto chiaro che nessuno dei soggetti coinvolti avrebbe potuto avere dubbi sulla qualità dell'impresa".
Su Paste, Allison Keene ha affermato: "Ho visto delle serie davvero, davvero brutte ai miei tempi, ma poche che siano deragliate così tanto e così velocemente. Ma, amico, che viaggio. Cannibali, cambiamento climatico, simulazioni fuori controllo, prigioni a scopo di lucro, un gioco senza regole e senza logica… che imbarazzo di ricchezze. O semplicemente un imbarazzo. Optiamo per quest'ultima".
Nella sua recensione Stream It or Skip It, Joel Keller di Decider ha dichiarato che la miniserie dovrebbe essere evitata e riassume affermando che "i dialoghi goffi e i personaggi generici di The I-Land fanno sì che ci importi ben poco del motivo per cui questi dieci idioti si trovino su quest'isola. E sì, sono praticamente tutti degli idioti".
Jack Seale di The Guardian ha assegnato alla miniserie una stella su cinque e ha riassunto così: "Questa è fantascienza senza una visione, un'opera di genere che non sa come funziona il proprio genere. The I-Land implora di essere dimenticata".
Scrivendo per RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico ha riassunto così: "La ‘I’ sta per Idiota. Se mettessi un gruppo di adolescenti in una stanza e mostrassi loro alcuni episodi di Lost e Westworld prima di chiedere loro di scrivere il proprio programma, potrebbero tirare fuori The I-Land", e che "è uno show di fantascienza sconcertantemente orribile, il tipo di progetto che ti lascia a bocca aperta, non diversamente dalla prima volta che hai visto The Room di Tommy Wiseau".
