Norma er et italiensk og engelsk kvinnenavn som kan bety «norm» eller «nordmann». Navnet er vanlig i mange land over hele verden, med hovedvekt i Latin-Amerika og Karibia. En navnebærer er den canadisk-amerikanske skuespilleren Norma Shearer.

Etymologi

Navnet kan være oppfunnet av Felice Romani til operaen Norma i 1831. Han kan ha tatt navnet fra latinske norma, «norm». Norma kan også være en feminin form av Normann, som har opprinnelse i norrøne norðr, «nord», og maðr, «mann».

Som nevnt over kan navnet Norma være oppfunnet i 1831, men er også kjent brukt i Italia fra sent på 1700-tallet. Navnet er kjent brukt i Norge fra 1869. Navnet var svært populært i USA i 1920- og 1930-årene, men har siden vært mindre brukt.
