Thelma er et engelsk kvinnenavn med usikker opprinnelse.

Etymologi

Opprinnelsen til navnet er usikker. Det har blitt knyttet til greske θέλημα (thelema), «vilje», men dette virker lite sannsynlig. Thelma kan også være en norsk feminin form av Tellev som har norrøn opprinnelse og er dannet av leddene þórr, «torden», og leif, «arv».

Utbredelse

Thelma er kjent brukt i Norge og Sverige fra midten av 1800-tallet. Navnet ble populært i den engelsktalende verden etter at den britiske forfatteren Marie Corelli brukte det som navn på den norske hovedpersonen i romanen Thelma i 1887.

Navnet er i dag vanlig i flere land.
