Calcium phosphide

Calcium phosphide is a chemical compound made of calcium and phosphide ions. The chemical formula is Ca3P2. The molar mass is around 182.18 g/mol. It appears as a red-brown solid. It is used as rodenticide, fumigant, and preparation of fireworks and flares due to phosphine gas.

Production

It can be made when calcium metal reacts with phosphorus to make calcium phosphide.

The balanced chemical equation is:
6Ca + P4 → 2Ca3P2

Reactions with calcium phosphide

When calcium phosphide reacts with water, it makes calcium hydroxide and phosphine gas.

The balanced chemical equation is:
Ca3P2 + 6H2O → 3Ca(OH)2 + 2PH3
