Cedar Point is an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. It opened in 1870. It is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the United States.
In the late-19th century, many people went to the shore of Lake Erie for vacation. The Cedar Point peninsula, named for having many cedar trees, was originally known for its fishing.
In the 1860s during the American Civil War, people built housing for soldiers on the peninsula. It was used to defend a prison nearby. Louis Zistel, a German immigrant, built two boats to transport the prisoners. In 1870, he began to ferry locals to the Cedar Point peninsula, which opened as a public bathing beach. He charged 25 cents per person to ride from Sandusky to Cedar Point on his boat.
