History

Gem was a shipping point on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The town was named from the Gem Ranch.

The first post office in Gem was created in 1885. It was closed in March 2014.

The 2020 census says that there were 98 people, 37 households, and 28 families living in Gem. Of the households, 78.4% owned their home and 21.6% rented their home.
