Magnesium nitride

Magnesium nitride is a chemical compound made of magnesium and nitride ions. The chemical formula is Mg3N2. The molar mass is around 100.949 g/mol. The micron powder is used for making cubic boron nitride crystals, and synthetic diamonds and for making steel smelting additives of high strength. It can be utilized in the production of special glass and catalyzed polymer cross-linked.

Production

Magnesium nitride can be made when magnesium metal reacts with nitrogen gas at high temperatures.

The balanced chemical equation is:
3Mg + N2 → Mg3N2

It can also be made when magnesium metal reacts with ammonia gas along with hydrogen gas as a byproduct at high temperatures.

The balanced chemical equation is:
3Mg + 2NH3 → Mg3N2 + 3H2

Reactions with magnesium nitride

When magnesium nitride reacts with water, it makes magnesium hydroxide and ammonia gas.

The balanced chemical equation is:
Mg3N2 + 6H2O → 3Mg(OH)2 + 2NH3
