Orthocarbonic acid

Orthocarbonic acid is a chemical compound with the chemical formula C(OH)4. It is also called methanetetrol. Orthocarbonic acid is a very unstable compound that normally breaks apart into carbonic acid and water. While derivatives of orthocarbonic acid have been known since the 1864 discovery of ethyl orthocarbonate, the parent compound was only prepared in 2025.
