Perameles is a group of marsupials in the Peramelemorphia order. They are called long-nosed bandicoots or barred bandicoots.
The name Perameles comes from Ancient Greek word πήρα (pḗra), which means "pouch" or "bag," and the Latin word mēlēs, which means "marten" or "badger."
More than half of the known recent Perameles species have died out. These extinct species were once thought to be the same as Peremeles bougainville, but a study in 2018 showed they are different species.
