The Pothohar Plateau (also spelled Pothwar, Potwar or Potohar) (Urdu: سطح مرتفع پوٹھوہار) is a plateau in northwestern Punjab, Pakistan. The area was the home of the Soan Culture (a stone age culture), and there are many fossils, tools, coins, and remains of ancient archaeological sites such as Taxila. It borders the western parts of Azad Kashmir and the southern part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The native dialect spoken in the region is Pothowari which belongs to the group of Lahnda languages (this group also includes Hindko and Saraiki). The biggest city of the plateau is Rawalpindi. Pothohari people also inhabit some parts of the neighbouring Azad Kashmir region such as the Mirpur District.
