Saffron Chu, or simply Chu, is an American comic book series published by Image Comics, created by John Layman and Dan Boultwood, and set in the Image Universe. Set before and during the events of the 2009–2016 series Tony Chu, Cannibal Detective (by Layman and Rob Guillory), the series follows criminal Saffron Chu, the estranged younger sister of Tony Chu and twin sister of Sage Chu, as she goes about committing numerous crimes. the title was announced near the end of 2020, running for two five-issue volumes: First Course and (She) Drunk History, after which it went in an extended hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though Layman has stated his intent for the series to return within the decade.

The series received a generally positive critical reception.

Plot summary

First Course

Tony Chu is a cibopath, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agent able to get psychic impressions from whatever he eats. His younger sister Saffron Chu is a cibopars, able to learn secrets from whoever she eats in the company of. Tony is a cop, Saffron is a criminal, and the two are on a collision course set to separate them forever.

(She) Drunk History

Following her release from prison, having learned the secrets of every other criminal imprisoned, food-powered master criminal Saffron Chu returns to state down the barrel of the biggest (and strangest) heist of her career: a blood-soaked time-travelling adventure involving an alcoholic art heist spanning the centuries.

Future

In July 2020, John Layman confirmed that Chu would return following the COVID-19 pandemic, "advis[ing] anybody excited about Chu to give a reread of Chew #36, the issue that gave [Saffron's] twin sister Sage her spotlight".
