History

Tipton was first called Pittsburg. It was created as Pittsburg in 1872. The people realized that another Pittsburg existed in Kansas, so they changed the name to Tipton. It was named after Tipton, Iowa, the former home of a local resident.

Geography

Tipton is at 39°20′22″N 98°28′15″W / 39.33944°N 98.47083°W / 39.33944; -98.47083 (39.33951, -98.470904). The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.25 square miles (0.65 km2). All of it is land.
