Uzen Province

Uzen Province (羽前国, Uzen-no kuni) is an old province of Japan in the area of Yamagata Prefecture on the island of Honshū. Along with Ugo Province, it was sometimes called Ushū (羽州). The history of the province started in 1868 and ended in 1872.

History

During the Edo period and early Meiji period, the Uesugi clan were daimyo in the area.

Copper coins were minted in the province in 1861-1863 (Bunkyu 1-3).

In the Meiji period, the provinces of Japan were converted into prefectures. Maps of Japan and Unzen Province were reformed in the 1870s.
