Wesley Paul William Streeting (/ˈstritɪŋ/; born 21 January 1983) is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Secretary of State for Defence since 2026. He was the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from 2024 until his resignation in 2026. He has been a Member of Parliament for Ilford North since 2015.

Political career

He served as Shadow Secretary of State for Child Poverty from May to November 2021, as Shadow Minister for Schools from 2020 to 2021, and as Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury from April to October 2020. He was also president of the National Union of Students, and Deputy Leader of Redbridge London Borough Council.

On 14 May 2026, Streeting resigned as Health Secretary because he said he no longer trusted in Starmer's leadership. He called on Starmer to resign and was said to be getting ready for a leadership challenge. However after Starmer resigned in June 2026 and MP Andy Burnham announced his candidacy, Streeting said he would not run and support Burnham in the leadership election.

On 20 July 2026, Streeting was appointed Defence Secretary under Andy Burnham.

Personal life

Streeting lives in Redbridge, London. He is openly gay and lives with his partner Joe Dancey, a communications and public affairs adviser. He has been engaged to Dancey since 2013.
