Ferdjioua (in berber : ferğiwa, in tifinagh : ⴼⴻⵔⵊⵉⵡⴰ) is a middle-sized city located in north-eastern Algeria, at the crossroads between Sétif, Constantine and Jijel and in the Tellian Atlas chain.
Located in Eastern Kabylie, the city sits in a depression surrounded by mountains often reaching altitudes over 1100m.
It is also close to the Babor Massif as it is not only visible in the highpoints of the city, but is located north of it in the communes of Tassadane Haddada and Elayadi Barbès.
Its proximity to Sétif and Constantine led to many people commuting to either city or immigrating there. These people immigrating to Constantine are said to be a big part of the Northern Constantinois diaspora in the city, which is also constituted of people from Jijel and Skikda.
Ferdjioua is ,in majority, inhabited by Kabyles Hadra, an arabic speaking amazigh ethnic group who is said to come from the old Kutama tribe and who live in Eastern Kabylie, sparsed between many wilayas, including Mila.
They're known for their arabic dialect which contains many loanwords from earlier spoken tamazight which seems to be closely related to tasahlite and taεmucct.
Tamazight was maybe spoken by elders in the highlands and in the french era according to monographies who described the berber origin of inhabitants in the northern part as ''undoubtful'' in constrast with the city itself and neighboring villages where, even if ethnically berber, became arabic speaking while keeping words revealing their background.
