Inactive heparanase-2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HPSE2gene. This protein is able to bind to heparin and heparan sulfate, but unlike its paralog HPSE, does not have heparanase activity. Instead, HPSE2 inhibits HPSE activity, possibly through competition for substrate.
