Metoq (Albanian: Metoqi; Greek: Μετόχι, Metochi) is a suburban settlement on the eastern outskirts of Sarandë, in Vlorë County, southern Albania. It lies near Gjashtë and Vrion, along the road network connecting Sarandë with Delvinë and the interior of southern Albania.
Although officially classified as a village within the Sarandë administrative unit, Metoq is also part of the developing suburban area surrounding the city. Municipal infrastructure projects and local reporting describe it in the context of Sarandë's urban periphery and residential expansion.
The area is also notable for archaeological remains from antiquity, including the ruins of a classical-period temple documented on a hill near the Gjashtë Pass.
Metoq is situated east of central Sarandë, in an area of low hills and relatively open terrain. The settlement lies close to Gjashtë and the Sarandë–Delvinë road, which provides access from the coastal city to inland settlements and the wider road network of southern Albania.
Its location places Metoq between the more densely developed parts of Sarandë and the surrounding countryside.
While Sarandë itself is situated on the Ionian Sea, Metoq is an inland settlement. Its proximity to the city connects it geographically and economically with the wider Sarandë urban area.
Metoq belongs to Sarandë Municipality in Vlorë County.
Under Albania's administrative division, it is officially designated as a village within the Sarandë administrative unit. This unit includes the city of Sarandë and the villages of Metoq, Gjashtë, Çukë and Shelegar.
The municipality maintains village-level representative structures. Its published list of village councils includes Metoq and identifies a local council for the settlement.
The official village designation is distinct from Metoq's geographical and functional relationship with Sarandë. Municipal infrastructure documents refer to Metoq as part of the city's peripheral area.
The area around Metoq contains archaeological remains associated with the classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods.
According to information published by the Municipality of Sarandë, the Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini identified traces of two classical-period temples on a hill near the Gjashtë Pass, beside the Sarandë–Delvinë road. Of these structures, the remains of one temple have been identified on the ground.
The site is presented by the municipality under the name Vila Antike e Metoqit (Ancient Villa of Metoq), although the archaeological description specifically concerns the remains of a temple.
The identified temple has an approximately square ground plan, measuring about 10 by 10 metres.
Its surviving walls consist of large, carefully worked stone blocks fitted together without mortar. According to the municipality's archaeological description, the walls are approximately 0.90 metres thick, with surviving sections reaching a height of about 1.30 metres.
Additional wall remains have been observed around the temple, possibly belonging to associated structures. Archaeological material found on the surface includes pottery fragments and parts of Hellenistic and Roman amphorae.
These remains form part of the wider archaeological heritage of the Sarandë area and provide evidence of ancient structures in the vicinity of modern Metoq.
Metoq has historically been a rural settlement, but its proximity to Sarandë has brought it into the city's developing suburban area.
Residential construction, local roads and infrastructure requirements have become increasingly relevant to the settlement as development has extended towards the eastern outskirts of Sarandë.
Local reporting in March 2026 described Metoq and neighbouring Gjashtë as areas experiencing urban development and growing demand for improvements to streets and public spaces.
The settlement therefore combines elements of its traditional rural landscape with the residential and infrastructural characteristics of a suburban area.
Metoq is connected to Sarandë and nearby settlements through local roads and the wider regional road network.
In 2022, the Municipality of Sarandë awarded a contract for improvements to road infrastructure and public lighting in the city's peripheral settlements, including Metoq, Gjashtë and Çukë. The recorded contract value was 5,690,260 Albanian lek before VAT.
In March 2026, a further municipal procurement procedure was announced for the rehabilitation of internal roads and public squares in Gjashtë and Metoq.
The project had an estimated maximum value of 41,533,333 Albanian lek excluding VAT. Its stated purpose was to improve local road infrastructure and public areas.
These projects form part of the municipality's infrastructure activities in the settlements surrounding Sarandë.
Metoq's economy is closely connected with that of Sarandë and the surrounding municipality.
The settlement has a rural background, while its location near the coastal city provides access to urban employment, trade, construction and services.
Sarandë is an important tourism and service centre in southern Albania. Its economic activities and development are relevant to the surrounding settlements, including Metoq, although separate economic statistics for Metoq are limited.
Metoq has historically been associated with the ethnic Greek communities of southern Albania.
In a study published in 1995, researcher Leonidas Kallivretakis examined the historical geography and demographic composition of Greek communities in Albania, including Metoq. The study reflects historical demographic research rather than a current population census.
The principal documented archaeological attraction in Metoq is the ancient temple site near the Gjashtë Pass.
The Municipality of Sarandë includes the site in its published information on the area's cultural and archaeological heritage under the name Vila Antike e Metoqit.
Metoq forms part of the wider historical and geographical landscape surrounding Sarandë, a region that also includes important archaeological and cultural sites such as Butrint and Lëkurësi Castle.
