Sankoo district, with headquarter at Sankoo, is a district in the Union territory of Ladakh, India, announced on 16 October 2026 by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

History

The demand for district status for Sankoo was raised by local representatives and organisations in Kargil. In March 2026, a delegation led by the Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, sought the creation of Sankoo and Shakar-Chiktan districts during a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

On 16 October 2026, Saxena announced the creation of Sankoo district, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration of local residents through separation from Kargil district.

The notification for the creation of Sankoo district along with separate LAHDC was published in the Ladakh e-Gazette on 16 October 2026.
