The album was part of a series of studio recordings in October 1957 that matched Webster and Coleman Hawkins with Oscar Peterson. The next day, Webster and Hawkins recorded Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster with Peterson's trio and Alvin Stoller on drums, and nine days later, Hawkins recorded The Genius of Coleman Hawkins with the Peterson Trio and Stoller.
Reception
This session is described by AllMusic as "one of the highlights" of Webster's "golden '50s run". The album was reissued in the early 1990s on CD with three bonus tracks, which include rare recordings of Webster playing piano. When it was remastered in 24-bit for a 2003 edition, additional photographs and new liner notes were also included.
Years given are for the recording(s), not first release. Note: All-Star albums feature sideman who are not necessarily listed while titles which include "Oscar Peterson" or the OP Trio are usually shortened.
