Stakes Is High is the fourth studio album by American hip hop group De La Soul. It was released on July 2, 1996, through Tommy Boy Records. The album marked a change in the group's sound and direction and was their first without producer Prince Paul. It was produced primarily by De La Soul, with additional production by Jay Dee, DJ Ogee, Spearhead X and Skeff Anselm. The album received generally positive reviews and was a moderate commercial success.
Stakes Is High was De La Soul's first album without longtime collaborator Prince Paul. The group felt that the material he submitted did not suit the album's tone.
The album addresses the state of hip hop, the commercialization of hip hop culture and gangsta rap. Rapper 2Pac later responded on "Against All Odds", from his posthumous 1996 album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, and on the unreleased song "Watch Ya Mouth", recorded during the same sessions. Naughty By Nature member Treach also objected to the album, leading to a feud that subsided about 15 years after its release.
The album helped introduce rapper Mos Def to a wider audience through his appearance on "Big Brother Beat". Common also appears on "The Bizness".
After the album's release, De La Soul toured extensively. Their next studio album, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, was released in 2000 as the first installment in the Art Official Intelligence series.
A 30th-anniversary edition was announced in July 2026 and released on October 23, 2026. It includes instrumental tracks and additional songs.
The album's interludes reflect the group's concerns about the state of rap and public perceptions of hip hop culture. The opening track features interview excerpts in which participants recall where they were when they first heard Criminal Minded. At the end of track 9, "Long Island Degrees", a man expresses his dislike of rap music using a racial slur. Track 10, "Betta Listen", ends with Posdnuos and Maseo discussing a miscommunication about a club.
At the end of track 15, "Pony Ride", an excerpt from the documentary Crumb features Maxon Crumb discussing his experiences living on the streets and alternating periods of optimism and depression. He remarks, "Stakes is high". The beginning and end of track 16, "Stakes Is High", feature recordings of people playing dice while a man nearby discusses the O. J. Simpson trials.
The final track, "Sunshine", ends with a young man saying, "Yo, when I first heard 3 Feet High and Rising, I was", before the recording cuts off. The interruption resembles the use of "Fight the Power" on Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet. The reference to De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, echoes the discussion of Criminal Minded in the opening track.
Robert Christgau wrote: "After almost four years, Posdnuos and company emerge from the ether like the long-lost friends they are. Their wordplay assured in its subtle smarts, their delivery unassuming in its quick, unmacho mumble, their cultural awareness never smug about its balance, they bind up an identifiable feeling in an identifiable sound, and just about every one of the 17 tracks comes equipped with a solid beat and a likable hook or chorus. It's a relief to have them back. But it's never a revelation."
