Lotteries in Australia

The article at Lotteries in Australia would benefit from somebody interested in reworking it. The current version is brief, has no citations, and seems to have been largely LLM-generated. The version before the rewrite was very long and overly detailed in many sections, and it had some citations but they weren't great. Still, some of that material could be salvaged. Dreamyshade (talk) 03:45, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

I have proposed the article be deleted under WP:PROD as something without citations is not worth keeping. I would still really like for someone to improve this though, that would mean the PROD tag could be removed with the addition of sources. Qwerty123M (talk) 12:18, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
I wouldn’t consider it eligible for PROD because plenty of sources exist, and previous versions of the articles had sources. We could roll it back to the earlier version that had at least some citations. Dreamyshade (talk) 14:22, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
I agree, so I did. Prod should never be used when older, referenced versions exist. The-Pope (talk) 14:28, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

Gazetting

A number of articles on Australian places include unlinked text like (on Pingrup, Western Australia) "The townsite was gazetted in 1924."

Automatic archive

Can the automatic archive on this page be made longer? Discussions just seem to never get resolved here as they disappear so quickly. Currently topics inactive for 14 days are automatically archived, while on the Talk Page it is 3 months. I understand that there are a lot of Requested Moves that clog up this page, but 14 days is too quick to archive everything in my opinion. Jimmyjrg (talk) 19:38, 16 August 2026 (UTC)

Short descriptions

Hi there,

I am currently in conversation with @Servite et contribuere about whether or not to add state names to short descriptions. I have objected to the inclusion of state names in short descriptions per WP:SD40 as they are long and because the city name adds enough detail without needing to know the state, the state name can be used at the first mention in the article, short descriptions need to be short and readable. This has made me wonder whether we should have advice similar to MOS:CANPLACE which touches on the topic of short descriptions. At the moment going by discretion is not the best idea because we have guidelines for nearly every activity on Wikipedia to standardise guidance and make a better reading experience, that is what I hope an Australian manual of style page can accomplish.

Thanks for your response. Qwerty123M (talk) 09:18, 22 August 2026 (UTC)

I mean to be fair, I am aware many people might not be familiar with some Australian states, although some might be some might be familiar with some more than others. One important thing is that Australian registrations on a lot of things are done at the state level rather than national level for example. But if we are going to create one, the first no brainer I have is that a location should never be "Suburb, City, State, Australia", "Suburb, City, Australia" or "Suburb, City" as that can be mentioned in the opening. One major thing is I do not want to reach a mandatory one size fits all approach. One idea I have is for a sports geographical guideline, especially for sports teams would be to focus on defining geographical characteristics of a sports team, although I think this is common practice. E.G. the region of Melbourne the Western Bulldogs play in for example, and the region the Manly Warringah Sea play is a defining part of their team identity, whereas the region/suburb that the Canberra Raiders play in, and the part of Tasmania the Tasmanian Devils will play in will have no relevance to their identity whatsoever despite the stadium controversy. I do agree we should keep the Short Descriptions short, but most were between 40 and 60, and even if they were over 60, most were only the tiniest bit over. WP:SD40 says that short descriptions that are. Looking at how Canada does short descriptions might actually be a good idea considering it is actually divided on how it should be done. The United States is not the best example as it is usually City, State, and often followed by the very short "US". But another consideration about the United States is for example, most people would not be familiar with Missouri for example, particularly outside the United States. I strongly did not want to remove New South Wales personally, and did feel some worry that if I didn't I would face possible sanctions. To be a fair, a good discussion is a great alternative to just ignoring. Another stance I strongly have is that the opening of an article that mentions a place should always be "City/Town/Suburb, State, Australia". I also think an appropriate intro for someone's birthplace would be as an example: "Was born in Wahroonga, a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia" (Just using Wahroonga as an example as it is my birthplace), and including the Hospital on people is also fine. And when creating this guideline, one goal I do want is for other guidelines to also be used if needed. Anyways, sorry for making this message very long, but I do indeed have a lot to say a lot of the time. Servite et contribuere (talk) 09:54, 22 August 2026 (UTC)

Unnecessary hatnotes for Marangaroo/Marrangaroo and Barangaroo?

There is a hatnote at Marrangaroo (New South Wales) and Marangaroo (Western Australia) for Barangaroo, New South Wales. If anything, the hatnote should be to the base name Barangaroo, the Aboriginal person, but I still find it so unlikely one would mix these up just because they rhyme. There are currently no hatnotes for the other direction. The hatnotes between Marangaroo and Marrangaroo are fine for obvious reasons. Thoughts? Fork99 (talk) 09:39, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

Yeah it doesn't make sense and I don't think anyone would complain if you removed them. They were all added by @Downsize43 in October 2018. It looks like they aren't active anymore. Maybe if there's a reference noting they are commonly confused then something could be added to the article? But if not, then it doesn't seem worth mentioning. Help! Citation error

I've just created David Tranter, and in the end gave up on trying to solve what the citation error is as I just can't see it - perhaps a new set of eyes could spot the problem? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 09:15, 30 August 2026 (UTC)

@Laterthanyouthink: I've fixed the cite error in Special:Diff/1372105033, you missed the closing /> in <ref name=raka. It took me a while to find because it was actually a cite error for an adjacent reference next to an invoked reference of int2006. By the way, I would suggest placing quotation marks around ref names ("ExampleRefName" instead of ExampleRefName) because this reduces the chances of cite errors if the ref name has a space or other special character, except for < or ". Fork99 (talk) 09:57, 30 August 2026 (UTC)
Aarrrgh, I now remember that happened once before ages ago, and it took me ages to find. Thanks very much for that. Yes, I know, but I prefer not using ", as I always use one-word names, and it's quicker that way. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 11:29, 30 August 2026 (UTC)

Power station/dam page moves

I just went to add detail to Tungatinah Power Station - given it suffered a major fire in the last couple of days - to find that it was moved to Lake Binney Dam earlier this year. The same appears to have been done to many other hydro power stations.

As someone familiar with the Tasmanian hydro network I'd never heard of that dam name before (or if I have, it was quickly forgotten), and - at time of me posting this - a Google News search for "lake binney dam" returns zero results about the fire, and only five results total. . In the case of power stations, the dam and (if applicable) associated lake are by-products/components of the primary topic - the power station.

In some cases, the created lake is notable in it's own right (e.g. Lake Barrington is a world class rowing venue that has hosted international competitions) and should have it's own article. I intend to change them back, but was there a discussion or naming convention that I missed? -- Chuq (talk) 00:38, 4 September 2026 (UTC)

Tagging @Rangasyd as they were the one who made the move. @Chuq if you think the topic of the power station would grow larger than the topic of the dam then you could remove the redirect, write a new article for the power station, and then add links between the two articles. Maybe sharing this discussion on the dam's Talk page would help gather other opinions too. Jimmyjrg (talk) 11:26, 4 September 2026 (UTC)
@Chuq and Jimmyjrg: Howdy, yes, on the principle of WP:BOLD, I moved Tungatinah Power Station to Lake Binney Dam – and many other Australian hydroelectric power stations – on the very simple and clear directions at {{Infobox power station}} that states:
Use this infobox for all types of power stations. For hydroelectric power stations involving dams (except tidal facilities), please use {{Infobox dam}} (my emphasis).
Hence, if one uses {{Infobox dam}}, it seems strange – indeed, the inbox parameters do not encourage – that the article should be called by the name of the power station and not by the name of the dam; and that the body of the article focuses on the hydroelectric power station, and not focus on the dam. Quite honestly, whether Chuq is familiar or not with the (Lake Binney or any other) dam is immaterial to naming conventions. Yet, I do take their comments about Google News search results – noting that Google News is not an infallible source, and suffers from recentism. For me, as an editor, the Australian National Committee on Large Dams is a good independent source in these matters, concerning dams, hydro or not hydro. IMHO, Hydro Tasmania is not such a great source, as it has vested interests to promote hydroelectricity and the wiz bang of hydro power stations, and be less focused on the dams and the associated environmental impact of flooding many thousands of hectares – some of which was pristine native forests. Also, the comment by Chuq about the dam being a by-product of the power station is an infinite regress argument that is as strong as the Chicken or the egg. Finally, I agree with Jimmyjrg, the best place for this conversation is at Talk:Lake Binney Dam; and not here. Rangasyd (talk) 12:12, 4 September 2026 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Munif Mohammed Abou Rish

Notice

The article Munif Mohammed Abou Rish has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Tagged for notability concerns for over 8 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Poorly sourced BLP. Created by a now-blocked sockpuppet. The subject was briefly in the news for claiming to commit an inchoate offence.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.

NSW geographical article titles created by a blocked user which need checking

Would anyone have the time and patience to please go through the first page of (the most recent 1000 page creations of D A R C 12345, who is blocked) and use the browser find tool to check all 246 articles with the comma disambiguation ", New South Wales" and check if the base name exists, either as a disambiguation page, a primary topic elsewhere, or is a redirect to the New South Wales article?

If the base name doesn't exist, the NSW article should either be moved or a redirect created to it, I don't particularly care which per WP:NCAUST. If the base name exists, then the NSW entry should have a disambiguation entry or hatnote.

I've already checked all other states/territories, the subsequent pages on that list (i.e. creations 1001 to 2655) and parenthetical disambiguated titles. Thanks heaps, Fork99 (talk) 09:19, 18 September 2026 (UTC)

@Dfadden, I saw you replied and then deleted your comment (Re-read Fork's comment and I misunderstood - this is not necessary - my bad).
To clarify, the issue is that the articles were created at unnecessary disambiguation, but because they were autopatrolled, they likely did not check the base name to disambiguate or even create a redirect from the base name. So, it's also unlikely anyone else has noticed while patrolling new articles because they would not have shown up in the NPP feed for long enough for anyone to notice. Almost every single article I checked in all other states/territories, the subsequent pages on that list (i.e. creations 1001 to 2655) and parenthetical disambiguated titles did not have even a base name redirect at the very least. Fork99 (talk) 21:09, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
I also find the easiest solution for each is to just check the base name for ambiguity (including as many plausible spelling variations as I can think of), then move to the base name, as creating a redirect is slightly more effort in my opinion. Fork99 (talk) 21:11, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
Yes sorry Fork99, I initially misread your comment - I was a bit hasty in my reply (morning brain fog) - the unnecessary part was reminding you of the RfCs aroud WP:NCAUST and lack of consensus around whether disambiguationis required in article titles. I appreciate and support your work on creating appropriate redirects amd hatnotes though and I will see what I can do to help! Dfadden (talk) 21:32, 18 September 2026 (UTC)

Request for indépendent assessment - high profile man case - Shane Cuthbert proposed biography

I am Shane Cuthbert, so I have an obvious conflict of interest regarding any proposed biography about me.

I am looking for an uninvolved editor to independently assess whether the available reliable secondary sources satisfy Wikipedia’s notability requirements and, if so, consider preparing a draft through Articles for Creation.

There is substantial independent coverage extending from 2012 to 2026 across multiple distinct periods, including News.com.au, ABC News, Nine/A Current Affair, Cairns Post/Courier-Mail, Cairns Local News, Guardian, Brisbane Times/The Age and other outlets. The coverage concerns earlier offending and later rehabilitation, youth-justice/community advocacy, the 2024 Cairns council and Queensland state elections, and the 2026 Cairns suppression-order/open-justice controversy.

I have prepared a source dossier containing the strongest original-publisher links and a source matrix. I am not seeking any particular wording or favourable treatment and would leave notability, weight and article content entirely to uninvolved editors.

If an editor is interested in assessing the sources or preparing a draft, I can provide the dossier/source list here. ~2026-51390-10 (talk) 22:50, 23 September 2026 (UTC)

Phonetics, anyone?

I saw this item about Bangarra Dance Theatre on the news last night, and it would be nice to mention the correct pronunciation of the word in the article if possible. However, my rusty knowledge of phonetic symbols is not up to Wiki standards, and I wonder if there's someone or somewhere to go to who may be able to transcribe the word phonetically into the current standard phonetic alphabet from listening to it? (You can here just the word here). Or is it worth posting in the Teahouse? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:40, 27 September 2026 (UTC)

Ignore that, I see that it has been added to the lead, which I somehow missed. I may just shuffle it around and add extra refs. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:42, 27 September 2026 (UTC)
ISTM that the latest change in pronunciation drops the 'g' from 'ŋ' completely (my attempts: /bʌˈnɑːrɑː/ or /bʌnˈɑːrɑː/) which is indeed a change from the source used in the article, the Wiradjuri Dictionary, spoken by Paul "Midnight" Brydon. I wonder whether the Bangarra Dance Theatre can be persuaded to donate their sound clip to Commons so it can accompany the IPA code, and whether they can assist with an IPA transcription. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:32, 27 September 2026 (UTC)
Yes, I thought that they sounded a bit different... I don't know? I could email them, but it would be better coming from someone who is actually involved in that work on Wikipedia I think. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:41, 27 September 2026 (UTC)

"Rorting" on Wine equalisation tax

As an American I understand there is an allowance for localized dialects of English on Wikipedia, but I find the use of "rorting" on this article to be too much. I believe that you CAN replace it with a generic term for the rest of us who never heard the thing, and when I searched for Rorting and Rort I only found links to an airport.

Don't you think we should skip the dialect in this instance? ~2026-52754-24 (talk) 06:13, 1 October 2026 (UTC)

I've added a link to Wictionary, because I can't think of a succinct generic term that carries quite the same meaning. Scam, fraud, cheating don't convey the same sense. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:30, 1 October 2026 (UTC)

Discussion re joint committee article

Please see Talk:Australian Senate committees#Separate article for joint committees? to see my idea about this - and if there's a table-savvy editor who's willing, it would not take long to knock up the new article (probably a list) if you agree. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 07:55, 7 October 2026 (UTC)

Source assessment and volunteer interest: Chris Loverseed

Disclosure: I'm Chris Loverseed, the subject, and this request was prepared with AI assistance.

There is an existing Requested Articles entry linking Kanebridge News, CEO Today and Inside Small Business features. These were unpaid interviews initiated by the publications. Additional reported coverage is ABC News's 2018 article about dog daycare.

Would an uninvolved editor be willing to assess whether this is enough independent secondary coverage for WP:BIO, and consider writing a biography if it is? The features rely substantially on interviews, and ABC covers my work within a wider story, so I am not assuming that they establish notability. No article or draft currently exists. I'm seeking volunteer help with assessment and original human authorship. ~2026-54099-45 (talk) 23:52, 9 October 2026 (UTC)

Problem editing source?

Is it just me, or has there been a problem with displaying the source when trying to edit (anything) on Wikipedia since yesterday? Only a few lines display, although it is there if I do a find on some text that exists, but it just doesn't display the whole section or article selected. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:27, 11 October 2026 (UTC)

No problems on my end. LivelyRatification (talk) 08:46, 11 October 2026 (UTC)
Thanks. It's weird, and is making it very difficult to edit on my computer. Happens on Firefox (my usual browser) as well as Edge and Chrome. I think I'd better find a tech help desk to assist me with this one. I assume there's somewhere I can ask... Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:07, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
p.s. just asked at the Village Pump. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:43, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
I use Firefox as well, have not tried any other browsers, although I do only use the source editor so I couldn't speak to problems when trying to use the visual editor. LivelyRatification (talk) 01:40, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
I only use the source editor too. I have a bit of assistance there - and the problem seems to be erratic... will report back if there's a particular solution. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:26, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
Still a problem, erratically, despite clearing caches, restarting, etc. Rather frustrating. But mostly working today if I just keep re-opening. Hoping it will just disappear completely one day... Laterthanyouthink (talk) 03:59, 14 October 2026 (UTC)

Purple benches?

The article Domestic Violence contained the assertion that "In Canada and Australia, purple benches installed in public places . . . honour the memory of victims murdered through domestic and family violence". I have removed Australia's inclusion in this assertion on the basis of one purple bench (a memorial to a dearly loved citizen) which to my knowledge this does not apply, and constitutes a gross calumny. Doug butler (talk) 22:11, 13 October 2026 (UTC)

There does seem to be some purple benches in Australia for this purpose (, , , , ), but it does seem to be mainly a Canadian phenomenon. LivelyRatification (talk) 22:16, 13 October 2026 (UTC)
Thanks LR I stand corrected. Doug butler (talk) 21:03, 14 October 2026 (UTC)

Resurrecting the Indigenous Australian style guide

There is still more work to be done in this area, particularly in light of the new work being done on the new ICIP & IDSov Guide, which came out of work done at the Canberra conference (which I was unfortunately unable to attend), with Terri Janke, Wikimedia CEO Belinda Spry and many others. This work is still ongoing, and some of you may be involved.

However, in the meantime... those of you who have been around for a while may remember my attempts to draft a style guide for how to refer to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia, here, which contains the background of my work at the time, as well as link to the draft I knocked up. As you can see on the talk page of the draft, it didn't move forward then, and despite my best efforts to find Indigenous editors to participate, as Poketama pointed out, we have not had First Nations consultation.

The reason I have raised this again is twofold:

I would like to propose that we really need at least an interim measure to act as a guide - aspiring to the first, but at least adding something to WP:INDIGENOUS about Australia that explains local preferences. That way we don't have to reinvent the wheel on countless talk pages. (We could perhaps also discuss, and decide by consensus, under what circumstances we refer to people as Aboriginal, or their more specific identity (Kaurna, Wiradjuri, etc.) in the lead, as opposed to in the body.)

So I'd like to restart the conversation, 7 years down the track, somewhere. Maybe on the talk page of my draft style guide, or talk page of the Indigenous peoples project? or somewhere else. I do feel that we need something somewhere. My current opinion is that, rather than get bogged down in the details of a project/draft that could take some time to get published in full, we should at least add a few basic guidelines to Australian usage to the WP:INDIGENOUS page, that we can all agree on.

My editing is erratic and I am probably going to be away again for a couple of weeks from next week, but I would really appreciate others getting involved in this conversation and making a determination on what to do in the short term. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:02, 22 October 2026 (UTC)

Probably easiest to add a few basic guidelines for Australian usage to WP:INDIGENOUS. Any dedicated MOS or naming convention guideline would require an RFC be held probalby at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (ethnicities and tribes) or simmilar and and the major centralised policy proposal project pages notified (e.g. WP:VPP, WP:VPR, etc.). That said if your addition of basic guidelines to WP:INDIGENOUS is reverted then you'd probably still need to go down that route. TarnishedPathtalk 01:28, 22 October 2026 (UTC)
It's great you're starting this again. Thanks for bringing it up.
On WP:INDIGENOUS it says "Numerous style guides state that "Indigenous" should also be capitalized, though this position has not gained consensus on Wikipedia, but it has been adopted by WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas and WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America." It then lists several North American style guides. It's pretty bad to be honest.
I think step one is to start a discussion on that Talk Page with Australian perspectives and references, so that at the very least some Australian style guides can be cited (which your draft already collects). Or can we be bold and just edit it directly?
Once that's done, taking another crack at the Style Guide draft and pushing for an Australian or Indigenous Australian MOS to be created. It could take 12 months or more so my only fear is that people will burn out at the slog. Jimmyjrg (talk) 07:13, 22 October 2026 (UTC)
Hi @Laterthanyouthink and @TarnishedPath, I have started a discussion here.: Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Capitalisation of Indigenous when referring to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as it seemed the most appropriate place. I have tried to emphasise that we are talking about the word within an Australian context. I hope you will please join the discussion there. Jimmyjrg (talk) 08:33, 22 October 2026 (UTC)
I'll have a look. I don't know if I'll contribute much, but I'll look. TarnishedPathtalk 08:39, 22 October 2026 (UTC)

Thanks - I haven't watched this myself yet but will do soon. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:37, 24 October 2026 (UTC)
@Laterthanyouthink This is a good thing to work on and of course we are long overdue to get it done haha. I think the big hangup as I've said before is that we really need consultation to do things correctly. However, I agree that simple things can be done - for example writing guidelines for capitalisation and style is way overdue and has a tonne of existing precedent. The fact that Elder or Aboriginal is something we still have to argue about the capitalisation is ridiculous, and it doesn't really need consultation to change. I think it would be worthwhile trying to get in touch with the Wikimedia foundation about what work they've been doing and what networks they have, cause it seems that they have already gotten reasonably far in building First Nations connections - its' weird they don't really reach out to us users who are actively doing the work though (UTS has reached out to me before though). So that collaboration would help. But I think broadly adopting someone like Reconciliation Australia's style guide is perfectly fine.
Maybe I'll get a bee in my bonnet and just do it this week. Poketama (talk) 05:21, 24 October 2026 (UTC)
Poketama - Just to let you know quickly - there is work under way as part of the ICIP and Indigenous Data Sovereignty project, and I believe that it is intended to set up a Culture Strong project page soonish, that may be the place to discuss more. However, although I am in the loop to come on board when it's created and have the time to contribute, I am not an official spokesperson on this, so don't know all the details and don't have the knowledge or authority to say more at this point. (Also at the moment have very little time and energy for this kind of work - but the intention is to get back to it!) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:36, 24 October 2026 (UTC)
I would like to contribute as well if you can give me someone to contact. This sounds quite interesting I'll read over it. https://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Respecting_First_Nations_knowledge_on_Wikimedia_platforms Poketama (talk) 23:40, 25 October 2026 (UTC)
Hi Poketama - yes, I read that (in stages) a little while ago - very interesting and quite a lot to get one's head around. Great that you are interested. User:BindiS is the best person to contact for details of how to get involved and they are happy for you to email them directly (or feel free to email me about anything else via my user page). Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:13, 26 October 2026 (UTC)

This is an important but complex matter. Good on you all for getting the ball rolling. Dropbear2 (talk) 22:24, 22 October 2026 (UTC)

Has there been an attempt to create an Australian Manual of Style, similar to MOS:CANADA?Jimmyjrg (talk) 06:49, 24 October 2026 (UTC)
Not as far as I know. I like the idea though. It could link out to specific pages that already exist, such as Wikipedia:Naming conventions (football in Australia), and a separate new one for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander style guide. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 07:20, 24 October 2026 (UTC)
I think this is a good idea and would support this. I'd be happy to help out drafting too. SnowyRiver28 (talk) 07:19, 26 October 2026 (UTC)
Fantastic, thanks SnowyRiver28. The ICIP/CultureStrong project is going to be announced soon and that will be a much bigger project, but it would be nice to start thinking about what could go into a general Australian MOS page in the meantime, I think. Not sure yet where to start that discussion - but perhaps let's wait for the discussion about capitalisation to finish first per jimmyrg's advice over there, around 5 November.
