Request for improvement of maps

Request

I created a number of maps using QGIS using some reliable sources from the internet, double checking them with available academic / hard-copies, and tracing them. In some cases using Gatehouse Gazetteer as a data source.

Discussion

As you can see from the maps, they're of a varied standard - decent enough to show the detail but I would be happier if they could be brought to standard that you guys create - this can either be done by pointing out what styling / formatting you use, or I can send you the QGZ file with all the shape files and other data files.

Thanks a bunch,

Qatar CMC constituencies and municipalities

Hello everyone.

How could I go about turning these 29 disparate images of the constituencies of Qatar's Central Municipal Council into a single map that could be used on Wikipedia? Ideally, I would also like to have a map overlaying the borders of these constituencies with the borders of the municipalities, to visualize the mismatch mentioned here. I couldn't find a single map of all the constituencies anywhere.

Many thanks, and good tidings, غوّاص العلم (Ghawwas) (talk) 12:33, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

@غوّاص العلم: They look like satellite images with overlaid text and lines. I don't think there's an easy way to convert it to map data except by tracing over the features.
You could rescale and translate the images to make a photocomposite, though unless it's an equirectangular or similar projection, there will likely be issues registering the images due to map projection.
It might be better to just get an SVG snapshot off OpenStreetMap. cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 17:43, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

This PNG has very small text. Would it be possible to recreate it as an SVG?
Instead of a separate legend, it would also be clearer to label the countries and capitals on the map itself.
Thanks! -- cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 21:39, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

Governorates of Syria
Request
Could someone translate the maps? Also, there are some mistakes, Quneitra Governorate have been formed in 1964, not 1965. And the Tartus Governorate have been formed in 1966 (not 1972). And the Damascus Governorate (intially called Damascus city governorate) have been formed in 1972, then renamed in 1986, while a previous Damascus Governorate became the Rif Dimashq Governorate.

Accessibility for 2 existing maps

Can someone who understands how to apply MOS:COLOUR to maps bring the following 2 maps into compliance (and conversion to SVG format)?

I am the creator of the second map. They are both being used in Daher al-Umar and the issue was raised in the current FAC. —Al Ameer (talk) 13:37, 15 August 2026 (UTC)

@Al Ameer son: As you're the creator of the second map, can you please provide your source files so that it's easier for editors to update the image? If it's in a format Commons does not accept, please upload to an external file-sharing site and share the link. Thanks, cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 22:43, 15 August 2026 (UTC)
Thanks @Cmglee: The source file is in Publisher. Is there any external site you can recommend for link sharing? --Al Ameer (talk) 21:59, 16 August 2026 (UTC)
@Al Ameer son: Oh, I didn't know about Publisher. Can you please link to it? Thanks, cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 12:52, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
@Cmglee: Here is the pdf version of the map (with revisions), as I could not figure how to upload the publisher version: File:Daher al-Umar phases of expansion.pdf. Note that I changed the color palette, which hopefully now conforms with MOS:COLOUR. In either case, are you able to convert this to an .svg file? Thank you again --Al Ameer (talk) 21:16, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
 Done
@Al Ameer son: Converted your PDF with http://cloudconvert.com/pdf-to-svg . cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 19:37, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
@Cmglee: Great; are you able to crop out the large white space along the left and right margins? (I do not have a tool to edit .svg files) --Al Ameer (talk) 02:31, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
@Al Ameer son:  Done cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 15:15, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

How do you make a precinct level map for election results?

I'd like to learn how to make a precinct level map for election results similar to [Prop 50 by precinct]. I'd appreciate a tutorial from anyone who knows how to do this, as I'm interested in making precinct level election maps like these. -- NVTRX (talk) 02:53, 15 August 2026 (UTC)

Consolidated precinct results
@NVTRX: If you're referring to this, do you mean for the same precincts, or precincts of a different state? If the former, and if the states were styled using CSS, amend the CSS appropriately. Otherwise, it's likely best to use some GIS software. cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 19:47, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
@Cmglee: To be honest, I'd love to learn how to make precinct level results for both California and other states. Though I'd probably do best to start with something easy. I'm unsure if any precincts changed between 2024 (the map I'd like to make, Prop 6) and 2025 (Prop 50). I'm somewhat inexperienced with this sort of thing. I'm not sure what you're referring to with CSS here, and as for GIS I do have QGIS installed but am pretty inexperienced in it. NVTRX (talk) 14:13, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
@NVTRX: SVG files comprise shapes which can be styled (e.g. coloured or outlined) either using a cascading stylesheet (CSS) or individually. If the latter, one has to search for each precinct and set its colour individually. If the former, one can just write e.g. set Precinct23, Precinct68 and Precinct 124 red and Precinct7 to blue. Some editors have made SVG in such a format.
Re QGIS, I'm unfamiliar with it so you'll have to ask at an appropriate forum or YouTube a tutorial. Good luck, cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 14:37, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
@Cmglee: I've mostly figured it out, but am having trouble styling the results "Wikipedia-style". I'm aware of Wikipedia:WikiProject Elections and Referendums/USA legend colors but it lacks color palettes for nonpartisan or primary races. I'm also not sure how thick or if there should be white lines separating precincts. NVTRX (talk) 16:17, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
@NVTRX: No idea too. Perhaps Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Humanities can help? cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 01:04, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

The current Aucanquilcha article discusses a ton of locations around the volcano, with sources, but unfortunately without a map. I wonder if anyone can make one. -- Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 07:05, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
