Wikipedia:Notability (restaurants)

This guideline is intended to extend WP:CORP with considerations endemic to restaurants, bars, cafes, and similar establishments. It is also not intended to replace, supplant, or otherwise alter the standard notability requirements.

The types of sources that are available for this type of business differ from those available for most others, and it is useful to clearly delineate how those sources may be used to establish notability within the meaning of the general notability guideline.

Notability of an establishment

Notability is not inherited. An example of this is the saloon where Caleb Claiborne Herbert was shot to death, for which the event and the person are notable, but the specific saloon is not. Similarly, a restaurant is not notable only because some of its owners or staff were notable.

An example of a restaurant having its own notability is Fraunces Tavern in Manhattan, which was the site of multiple events in American history.

Restaurants which are featured in multiple notable artistic works, such as Tom's Restaurant in Manhattan, are also notable because information about them gives context to those artistic works.

Some restaurants have been the subject of academic research due to some characteristic for which they are individually notable, such as blindekuh.

Types of Coverage that Establish Notability

Notability is established by significant coverage of the establishment, not by the significance of the sources in which it receives routine coverage or passing mentions.

Routine Coverage

Examples of routine coverage are:

These types of coverage not serve to convey notability to restaurants because these articles strive to provide exhaustive coverage of the area they serve. A newspaper's role in providing this coverage is distinct from its role in reporting significant events, in that it essentially provides a directory. Tavern on the Green is an example of a restaurant having significant non-routine contemporary news coverage for a variety of events.

A review or announcement could support notability if it has significant coverage of the establishment in addition to the review or announcement, and is in a reliable source.

Restaurant guides

Inclusion of a restaurant in a restaurant guide generally does not confer notability. The vast majority of restaurant guides attempt to be inclusive rather than exclusive, and provide little information about the significance of an establishment in its community.

The exclusivity or prestige of an award also does not confer notability, and coverage that only mentions the conferral of an award is not significant coverage. It is possible that announcements of particularly prestigious awards will include significant coverage of an establishment.
