Wikipedia:Link rot/URL change requests

This page is for requesting modifications to URLs, such as marking dead or changing to a new domain. Some bots are designed to fix link rot; they can be notified here. These bots include InternetArchiveBot and WaybackMedic. This page can be monitored by bot operators from other language wikis since URL changes are universally applicable.

State government websites in the United States

Whether or not I am supposed to add this here, I don't know, if I am not supposed to put it here, let me know. But to go along with whoever listed US federal government websites on this page. I also think there needs to be something done about sources citing the governors office websites in several states since the 2024 election. This probably needs IABOT or something to go in and archive all of them. Those include the office of governor websites in:

More states might need to be added. The reason why I am requesting these states (and really any state if you think about it) websites be archived by IABOT is because I've been noticing a couple of dead links on governor.wv.gov that were created during Jim Justice's tenure that were deleted whenever Patrick Morrisey took office. I tried to summon InternetArchiveBot (IABOT) but had problems with Oauth.

In addition, ANY state government website that deals with a particular administration, there needs to be an archive link put up if its used in a citation. That goes for office of governor, their legislative sites, and anything else that may be deleted when the next administration is elected. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 02:46, 8 January 2026 (UTC)

User:Hurricane Clyde absolutely right. I started going through all 50 and completed 10: Wikipedia:Link_rot/URL_change_requests/Archives/2025/June#Five_USA and Wikipedia:Link_rot/URL_change_requests/Archives/2025/July#Five_USA_set_2. I gave up on CA it's too complicated. I pinned this thread so it is not archived and a reminder to keep going. All these government sites are very difficult: they have been in existence since the 1990s, have gone through continues changes and updates with new administrations and technology. They are fragmented with sub-domains under different departments and issues. But every one I did required a lot of updates they all need work. -- GreenC 21:43, 31 January 2026 (UTC)

ift.org.mx and cofece.mx

On hold pending dissolution. -- GreenC 04:21, 18 October 2025 (UTC)
It took place on October 17 for the former and presumably a similar time for the latter. Sites are still up for now (but with the replacing agency's logo). Unclear whether they will use it or another page for their own business. I suspect the domain rpc.ift.org.mx (full of PDFs containing broadcasting technical information) will be retained intact at some other domain at some point. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 06:32, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
If it's a new agency at the same domain.. what does this mean we should do in terms of archiving URLs? Options are do nothing. Or treat all URLs as dead and add archive URLs. -- GreenC 16:06, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
With the IFT and Cofece, the sites seem to be up as an archive. I am expecting the domain https://rpc.ift.org.mx/ —which contains most of our IFT citations—to move at some point, so put a pin in this thought for now. I will let you know when that happens. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 18:01, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
@GreenC: I finally have a use for this, and then I think this section can be archived. There are 728 links to rpc.ift.org.mx that need to switch to rpc.crt.gob.mx. It took them nearly a year to get this on a CRT subdomain, and they finally did it this morning. There are no changes to URLs otherwise. I did one manual edit from the BrieBot account to demonstrate, Special:Diff/1376194867. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 17:51, 22 September 2026 (UTC)

This domain (> 17,000 pages) has problems, not least there was a mass casualty event that eliminated 10s of thousands of URLs displaying a blank page. this (blank page) can now be found here. This rule works most of the time, but some not. In others the slug changed like this is now here (nesns vs. nesn-s) .. there is a method to find these searching the Wayback CDX records. -- GreenC 17:31, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

Discussion

Is there any way to fix those recap links to 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs and other similar pages? DiophantineEquation (talk) 09:52, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
User:DiophantineEquation: I was able to identity 27 articles with unconverted recap links. Reran in Pass 3 above with 12 page edits (107 links). No explanation for this gap, possibly those 12 missed a code update during the early development cycle. Not all recap links can be converted. If you see anything else let me know. -- GreenC 16:49, 1 August 2026 (UTC)

The URLs are so divergent, there is not enough information to create conversion rules. It would either require a map provided by NAS, or even better, NAS creates HTTP/S redirects which is a standard practice. The backstop is convert to Wayback archives. -- GreenC 03:41, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Good news. The trailing slug ("/haim-brezis-a6fxxh") is optional: https://www.nasonline.org/directory-entry/haim-brezis .. thus any old "/member-directory/" path can be inferred based on name .. they account for about 40%. The /news path is not recoverable but it only accounts for about 15%. The /biographical-memoirs like this is now here (new path, same filename). The /member-directory like this is now here (need inference check with first-last and first-middle-last). -- GreenC 22:29, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
Hello, I managed to replace the majority of http://www.nasonline.org/member-directory/members urls on frwiki using the index provided by the sitemap files and a distance comparaison script.
If somebody wants to run the same here on enwiki, you can download all "directory-entry-*" sitemaps in a folder, and run the following phab:P95321. The only error I identified is for George F. Gao . Thanks, Framawiki (please notify me when you reply) 09:09, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
Pages prefixed by http://www.nasonline.org/member-directory/deceased-members/ was moved to the same destination, so the same script is working too for them. Thanks, Framawiki (please notify me when you reply) 14:06, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
User:Framawiki: Thank you for the sitemap link that is helpful. I didn't use the Python script because it does not have features built into my bot framework. Not using fuzzy matching it's risky for false positives and false negatives. Using various deterministic techniques. The WaybackMachine archive of the old link can sometimes contain useful information for building an inference table of URLs to try, as does the Wikipedia article, and citation. Found NAS is blocking with 403 CloudFlare challenge. Was able to get through with headless browser, although it's quite slow and does not always work for unknown reason, need wait and retry later (possibly rate limiting time window). -- GreenC 18:25, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
BTW I now have a table of the conversions for basically all URLs all wikis. Hopefully in the future I can apply this to other wikis (I18N limits), but for now it is available to anyone who would like a copy. -- GreenC 15:46, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
Hello @GreenC, good job! I’d be interested in a mapping table to correct the links on the French wiki, particularly those that don’t relate to biography pages (such as the News section). If you still have it, could you send it to me, in any format you prefer? my email is framawiki@tools.wmflabs.org, and I also have botflag on wikidata if needed. iffhs.com

IFHSS (https://iffhs.com) has updated its website structure, affecting both the visual layout and the URL links.
Consequently, many references need to be updated, and the question is whether a bot can handle these updates or if everything must be changed manually, e.g. on IFFHS World's Best Player for the ref. with "IFFHS WORLD'S BEST MAN PLAYER OF THE DECADE 2011-2020" as title:

The number at the end (in this case, "954") in the old url-structure is retained in the same way for all URLs in the new structure; the only difference is that a title now precedes it. Miria~01 (talk) 08:33, 21 July 2026 (UTC)

The site requires the ID ("954") but the slug string is optional: https://iffhs.com/en/news/zzz-954 .. "zzz" can be anything eg. https://iffhs.com/en/news/this-slug-is-nonsense-954 .. once you have the page the "real" slug can be extracted to make: https://iffhs.com/en/news/iffhs-best-man-player-world-of-the-decade-2011-2020-954 .. other issues with path length limit of 71 characters and various edge case rules.

Broken links can be saved by cleaning up the URLs (per MrLinkinPark333 suggestion above). I'll list the passes below and what was done in each. -- GreenC 16:07, 5 August 2026 (UTC)

History

FindArticles was est. in 2000 and was one of the foundational sources for early Wikipedia ca. 2001-2007. It contained millions of online versions of print magazine and newspaper articles. After 2007, the company was sold, and in July 2012 it was in-effect a dead website. In 2025 the domain was sold for its SEO value, and today the new owners serve AI slop with crypto and gambling advertising. Only about one-third of the links on enwiki had archive URLs. This project found more and brings it up to two-thirds. The remaining third have dead link tags. These links are deleted in Pass F: it is a usurped site and no archives exist.

Enwiki

Pass A Checked 455 pages and edited 372 pages. Made live 398 URLs. Removed 1 {{dead link}}.
Removed about 80% of archive.today links. Removal only, Wayback replacements to be added in Pass D2

Rewrite the origin URL to match an available Wayback URL (to be added in Pass D2) for those citations currently without a Wayback URL.
Pass C - Part 2: Checked 358 pages and edited 357 pages. Moved 425 links to a new URL: 425 ruled mapped redirects, Resolved 1 soft-404s. Removed 63 {{dead link}}.

Although this redirects, the certifications are no longer available. Therefore, I would like to request archives only. ~2k. Thank you! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:30, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

Hi MrLinkinPark333, not sure how to process. Comparing for example archive with live. The content looks the same but reformatted. More significantly, 1,813 pages are the same URL (archive) which was the search landing page. The new site has no search landing page but the search button is available at https://www.irma.ie/irish-charts/ .. but this is the URL you say has no certifications (not sure what that means) and to archive it.. but if archived the search button would not work. -- GreenC 04:39, 21 August 2026 (UTC)
Per Template:Certification Table Entry, Irishcharts were used for certifications. This information is missing at irma. Irish charts ended in 2013 while first irma chart started in 2014. Therefore, these urls can't be converted over. I mentioned this just in case you noticed redirects to a different website. Template talk:Certification Table Entry also mentioned that there's archived copies of the certifications.MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 06:32, 21 August 2026 (UTC)
For example given this citation from Zara Larsson, how should it look?
<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.irishcharts.ie/search/placement |title=The Irish Charts – All there is to know |publisher=IRMA |access-date=20 January 2017 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100105231849/http://www.irishcharts.ie/search/placement |archive-date=5 January 2010}} Note: Search for "Never Forget You" in the "Search by Song Title" bar. The first two results are for the correct song.</ref>
The /search/placement URLs make up the majority of citations (78%) -- GreenC 15:55, 21 August 2026 (UTC)
I forgot that search url used to be part ofTemplate:single chart. That's only for peak positions of songs. The certifications are linked here. Unless the search result has a specific artist and/or song, I think /search/placement would need to be tagged as broken unfortunately. I tried searching within the archived page but it doesn't work. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:38, 21 August 2026 (UTC)
It is still possible to search the live site. If the archived version was used, the search would be broken. Recommend moving /search/placement to here that has the working search button on the live site. For the certifications.. sorry I still don't understand. Can you edit an article by hand that demonstrates what should be done and I can look at the diff? -- GreenC 02:36, 22 August 2026 (UTC)
Update: found this works, to get to the search menu. -- GreenC 02:42, 22 August 2026 (UTC)
For the ones under /awards/, the urls should be under type of certification (gold, platinum or multi platinum) and last two digits of the year. For example She Wolf (album) is gold 09 in the article, which is here.
Unfortunately, some of the links are missing the years in the above search. I think it'd be easier to extract a list of the ones that are missing information first. Otherwise, I could update the links before archived links are added. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 04:30, 22 August 2026 (UTC)
Hi. I see that this bot/script is starting to replace links to the IRMA search page. Personally I think the script/job is incomplete. Or, at the very least, is missing an opportunity.
In this change, for example, the bot/script replaced a parameter-based link (to the "old" search page) with a generic link (to the "new" search page). "Hacking off" the parameters in the process.
If we retain the parameters then the "new" search page works broadly as before. Returning results that actually support the text they sit alongside.... Guliolopez (talk) 09:56, 25 August 2026 (UTC)

On the year-less URLs. I looked into whether gold.htm / platinum.htm / multi_platinum.htm need rewriting to <type><YY>.htm, and they don't – the rewrite would actually break them:

So no derivation is needed and no articles need updating first: the page each citation already points at is the page holding the certification. They just need an archive link, which the bot will add.

The two red rows are the only ones needing manual work. gold17.htm and gold07.htmt have no archive because no such page ever existed, so the bot can only tag them. Five citations across three articles.-- GreenC 20:17, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

@GreenC: Fixed Van Morrison, so that one can be archived. I might have to manually remove Liam Gallagher and Louisa Johnson if they fail verification. I only saw one citation to gold17 in Johnson, not 3. Search result only shows 2. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:03, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

Baltimore Sun

There are a lot of broken links here for the entire website. I'll have to break this up into multiple sub-requests because of the rules below. The current URL format is /year/month/day/name-of-article/. Any with the date format or articles.baltimoresun.com can be skipped. Articles.baltimoresun.com were checked in 2024. Also, there are archive dot today urls as well.

I'll make multiple passes based on actions performed (similar to findarticles.com but hopefully fewer passes). Baltimore Sun fortunately has a sitemap, an API, and relevant header data, all of which are pretty good. I'll build on the rules found below + these other datasets. The problems that might arise are paywalls and rate limiting. -- GreenC 19:34, 21 August 2026 (UTC)

baltimoresun.com/news/

Some urls have multiple of these rules together. ~4k.

baltimoresun.com/sports/

The same rules apply to sports articles, with some exceptions:

~1k.

~7k. However, I'm not sure if there are articles that have both ones to check and skip in the same page. I might have missed some from the search results.

Overall, there's 13k. I want to filter out the urls with /year/month/day/ and articles.baltimore.sun. If you see patterns of URLs that don't work and not in these sections, please let me know. I'll see if I can find more rules for these. Thank you very much! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:41, 20 August 2026 (UTC)

credoreference.com

This website exsited until it was bought by Infobase in 2018 per Credo Reference. Although urls redirect, it leads to infobase's login page with the user's ip address. I don't have an infobase account and cannot verify the accuracy. I believe the best solution is to treat the website as permadead. ~600 Thank you! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 10:11, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

History: Credo Reference is a subscription aggregator of reference works - encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographical registers. The real source is Columbia University Press, Routledge, McFarland, Chambers, SAGE, Grey House and a few hundred others. Credo was acquired by Infobase (2018) and every anonymous request now terminates at an Infobase login.
Status: The quality of archives is very bad: exampleexample. When not logged in they scrambled it with lorem ipsilon. Many like this falsely enter a redirect maze. This form works, but not common. About 80% of archives are unusable.
Solution: If a complete archive exists (preexisting on wiki, or new) use that. About 20%. For everything else, extract metadata from the soft-404 archive page if possible (author, work, date, page, etc). Nuke existing archives and urls, and make the citation cite book or encyclopedia, with no url and no archive, but enriched with better metadata. This clears out junk and frees up the citation for new links pointing elsewhere.

MrLinkinPark333, I've tried to get past site defenses. As you noted it rate limits after only a few pages, and if you go too fast they automatically delete your account and you can't even get to the home page, it redirects to a login page. The site hits back! Two options: contact them for temporary access to fix Wikipedia links. Or make "blind moves", where links are moved blindly with no verification. This will create some percentage of bad links. -- GreenC 04:36, 7 September 2026 (UTC)
If you could contact them first, that might be an easier fix. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 07:39, 7 September 2026 (UTC)
I can try, but in all the years doing this it has never worked. Thought of another idea. When adding the new URL, at the same time add a new archive-url for the old URL (snapshots predating 2026 are clear). It mitigates errors, users can still find the old URL archive. About 65% have an archive available. In the mean time, if the sysadmins at boxrec reply, I can redo the domain later. -- GreenC 16:02, 7 September 2026 (UTC)

Christie's changed their url structure at some point. All the old urls with "christies.com/Lotfinder/lot_details.aspx" have a parameter "intObjectID=", which is a number. That parameter became part of the url under the new structure. As an example "https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=5685694" becomes "https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5685694". A large sub-set about 20% of URLs contain /todays-paper/ (Example). The text downloads, flashes, then JavaScript hides it. It is a paywall. This paywall problem has come up in the past. So, I added a new configuration feature for subscription websites. It adds |archive-url= + |url-status=live + |url-access=subscription. This recognizes the link is still live in reality, but behind a paywall, and provides an archive for those who want the content that way. -- GreenC 05:37, 25 September 2026 (UTC)

Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility is shutting down. External links search shows 278 hits. Chlod (say hi!) 03:54, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

Hi User:Chlod. https://cmfr-phil.org/ is still live, along with every link I spot checked. Sometimes organizations will keep content online as a digital archive. It's relatively cheap to keep a static copy of the content online. How long that lasts is impossible to say, depending whoever funds it. The question for us: do we mark links as dead even though the site is live, but the organization itself is dead. It raises philosophical questions what counts as dead vs. live .. For simple news articles it's probably doesn't matter either way, but they also have some interactive databases which won't work in the WaybackMachine, but do work at the live site, thus marking those links dead would be a regression. I notice the website is failing technically in a few non-critical areas, like the clock on the homepage. -- GreenC 18:45, 6 October 2026 (UTC)

popmatters.com/pm/music/reviews/

As far as I can tell, all 325 of these produce soft 404's, so archive links need to be added. In the couple of cases I checked, the content is available on the live web but there's almost but not quite a pattern between the old and new URL's, due to extra numbers being added in the new URL scheme ((e.g. http://www.popmatters.com/pm/music/reviews/23755/nickelcreek-thisside/ is now https://www.popmatters.com/23755-nickelcreek-thisside-2496013213.html and https://www.popmatters.com/pm/music/reviews/54008/nick-cave-and-warren-ellis-music-from-the-motion-picture-the-assassination-/ is now https://www.popmatters.com/nick-cave-and-warren-ellis-music-from-the-motion-picture-the-assassination-2496181445.html). Another music review site, this one with 839 uses ... it still seems to be going but has lost most of its content and is returning dead links on almost all of its pages linked from here, at least some of which have soft 404's. InternetArchiveBot didn't touch http://www.tollbooth.org/2002/reviews/ncreek.html but did archive this link. As for links that actually are live, I checked all the HTTPS links manually (assuming them to be newer) and the only working one I found was https://tollbooth.org/music-reviews/michael-sweet/master-plan-michael-sweet. Thanks again. Graham87 (talk) 09:37, 23 September 2026 (UTC)

I spent a while tracking what happened. In March 2024, the site moved CMS from Joomla to Drupal, and this is when nearly 30 years of articles from 1995 -> February 2024 simply vanished. It looked suspicious like the domain expired and it was taken over by scammers, but nope, the same people appear to run it, the content does not exist anywhere else on the website, and no other websites have the content. Even the same authors continue to publish from 2024-present. They just deleted the old content, for whatever unknown reason. -- GreenC 01:27, 24 September 2026 (UTC)

asiaplustj.info

Old domain: asiaplustj.info (incl. www.)
New domain: asiaplus.news

Asia-Plus, an independent news agency in Tajikistan (founded 1996), moved from asiaplustj.info to asiaplus.news in March 2026. Old article URLs return a 301 redirect to the same article on the new site. The old domain stays registered and keeps redirecting for now, but we'd like citations on Wikipedia to point directly to the current URLs.

On en.wikipedia this covers about 413 links in 282 articles. I checked each link and compared the date in the old URL with the date in the final URL:

Existing |archive-url= values can be kept as they are. Only |url= needs updating.

Disclosure: I work for Asia-Plus. That's why I'm asking here instead of editing the articles myself. Бахманёр Надиров (talk) 06:12, 25 September 2026 (UTC)

Update: the links that redirect to the wrong article (7 distinct URLs, 11 links) are now resolved by hand and added to the mapping page, so they no longer need to be skipped. For these, please use the listed target rather than following the redirect. Everything else in the request is unchanged. Бахманёр Надиров (talk) 07:03, 25 September 2026 (UTC)

Moved from User talk:GreenC

Hey GreenC. I was wondering if IAB can replace hrcak.srce.hr links to PDFS such as https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/36682 that are now marked as dead (because they're disallowing robots) with https://hrcak.srce.hr/clanak/36682 (file/ → clanak/). I've fixed a few dozen, like in Special:Diff/1377516001 or hr:Special:Diff/7604785/7609629, but for any future work this should better be automated. WP:RICHMEDIA applies anyway. Thank @GreenC. Is it possible to have IAB not mark the /file links as dead? They're only "dead" for robots, since recently. Many journals are hosted there and people will keep adding these links. Ponor (talk) 02:33, 2 October 2026 (UTC)

They might exist, but hidden in a subscription service . One option is like thehindu.com: |url-access=subscription + |archive-url= + |url-status=live .. it's sort of a guess though as I have no way of verifying the content is there; and meanwhile the "live" link returns 404 and provides no paywall or subscription notification, looking exactly like a dead link. I think it might be easier to check a handful of links in each subdomain/main website first. Then, the request could focus on the areas that are redirecting or broken. Otherwise, the entire website is ~18k. Let me know what you think. Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:01, 10 October 2026 (UTC)

It was difficult to determine the exact pages with cornell.edu URLs due to WMF API timeouts, so I took a broad sweep of all possibilities ~ 42k and let the program sort out which ones contain a URL during processing. Discussion

This bot keeps marking links as broken that, when I click them, work fine. –jacobolus (t) 22:05, 17 October 2026 (UTC)

–jacobolus: Can you provide some examples? This was a challenging site due to bot blockers and rate limiters, and the scale, but anything can be fixed if I know the problem. -- GreenC 22:19, 17 October 2026 (UTC)
Based on your edit history, it looks like you found some math books that redirect to HathiTrust. For example this redirects to this. In total there are 31 URLs across 30 articles. I suggest the bot replace the cornell.edu link with the destination URL at Hathi. Redirects are fragile and these are actually a double redirect so the chances of it failing are high; it is safer not to use a proxy. The HathiTrust URLs (handle.net) are persistent identifiers meaning they never change or redirect. -- GreenC 22:35, 17 October 2026 (UTC)
That sounds good. Can the bot change all of the links of this type? –jacobolus (t) 23:17, 17 October 2026 (UTC)

pastemagazine.com/endlessmode.com

Follow up on an older request - it looks like some Paste (magazine) redirects are broken (Paste originally redirected a bunch of older articles to Endless Mode with a new masthead & when they shuttered that website, redirected them to The A.V. Club with that masthead). For example, https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/10/storm-kings-thunder-is-a-performative-dungeon-mast.html redirects to a "not found" at https://www.endlessmode.com/video-games/dungeons-dragons/storm-kings-thunder-is-a-performative-dungeon-mast but you can find the article at https://www.avclub.com/storm-kings-thunder-is-a-performative-dungeon-mast. Not sure if this is just an issue of Paste → Endless Mode → A.V. Club or also original Endless Mode articles → A.V. Club.

I think even if the Paste/Endless Mode urls can be matched with an A.V. Club url, it should be instead marked as dead with an archive link showing the original masthead if that is available. The A.V. Club version does not indicate anywhere these articles were originally published by other news outlets and it could lead to confusion (ie. a reader or editor could see "Cameron Kunzelman, for Paste, wrote ..." & then wonder why the citation says A.V. Club instead). Sariel Xilo (talk) 23:20, 17 October 2026 (UTC)
