An article's assessment is generated from the class and importance parameters in the {{Tree of Life}} project banner on its talk page

Class
The following values may be used for the class parameter and should be assigned according to the quality scale:
FA (adds articles to Category:FA-Class taxonomic articles)- A (adds articles to Category:A-Class taxonomic articles)
GA (adds articles to Category:GA-Class taxonomic articles)- B (adds articles to Category:B-Class taxonomic articles)
- C (adds articles to Category:C-Class taxonomic articles)
- Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class taxonomic articles)
- Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class taxonomic articles)
- FL (adds pages to Category:FL-Class taxonomic articles)
- List (adds pages to Category:List-Class taxonomic articles)
- Cat (adds pages to Category:Category-Class taxonomic articles)
- Disambig (adds pages to Category:Disambig-Class taxonomic articles)
- Redirect (adds pages to Category:Redirect-Class taxonomic articles)
- Template (adds pages to Category:Template-Class taxonomic articles)
- NA (adds pages to Category:NA-Class taxonomic articles for pages where assessment is unnecessary)
- ??? or blank (adds pages to Category:Unassessed taxonomic articles)
Importance
The following values may be used for the importance parameter and should be assigned according to the importance scale:
- Top (adds articles to Category:Top-importance taxonomic articles)
- High (adds articles to Category:High-importance taxonomic articles)
- Mid (adds articles to Category:Mid-importance taxonomic articles)
- Low (adds articles to Category:Low-importance taxonomic articles)
- ??? or blank (adds page to Category:Unknown-importance taxonomic articles)
Pages where assessment is unnecessary, such as categories, templates, and disambiguation pages, are automatically assigned an importance of NA and added to Category:NA-importance taxonomic articles
Other parameters
The following parameters are used to assess specific needs for individual articles and are used in the form:

- needs-taxobox=yes (adds articles to Category:Missing taxobox
- needs-photo=yes (adds articles to Category:Taxonomic articles needing images
- attention=yes (adds articles to Category:Taxonomic articles needing attention) for cases where immediate attention is needed.
Quality scale
Importance scale
The criteria used for rating article importance are not meant to be an absolute or canonical view of how significant the topic is. Rather, they attempt to gauge the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic (and thus the immediate need to have a suitably well-written article on it). Thus, subjects with greater popular notability may be rated higher than topics which are arguably more "important" but which are of interest primarily to students of botany.
Note that general notability need not be from the perspective of editor demographics; generally notable topics should be rated similarly regardless of the country or region in which they hold said notability. Thus, topics which may seem obscure to a Western audience—but which are of high notability in other places—should still be highly rated.
