Cecidoses eremita Curtis, 1835 è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia Cecidosidae, diffuso in America meridionale.

Etimologia

L'epiteto specifico deriva dal termine latino ĕrēmīta, ae (= eremita, solltario), attribuito da John Curtis probabilmente a causa del fatto che le larve inducono nelle piante ospiti la formazione di cecidi (altrimenti noti come "galle"), entro cui si sviluppano con maggiore protezione nei confronti dei predatori.

Descrizione

Adulto

Si tratta di una piccola falena con nervatura alare di tipo eteroneuro, ma apparato riproduttore femminile provvisto di un'unica apertura sia per l'accoppiamento, sia per l'ovodeposizione.

Capo

Il capo è piccolo, con occhi grandi e ravvicinati al vertice; gli ocelli sono assenti, come pure i chaetosemata; i palpi mascellari sono rudimentali, così come quelli labiali; la spirotromba è assente, come pure la sutura epicraniale.

Le antenne sono lunghe quanto il corpo (circa i due terzi della costa dell'ala anteriore), sottili e ciliate.

Torace

Il torace è corto e di un marrone leggermente più scuro rispetto al resto del corpo.

Le ali anteriori sono sublanceolate, brunastre e screziate di nero; l'apice è arrotondato, non falcato e il termen è quasi rettilineo, con tornus lievemente ottuso. L'ala posteriore, più corta e bianco-grigiastra, presenta una riduzione del sistema legato al settore radiale (Rs), con anastomosi di Sc ed R dal quarto basale fino al termen, ed Rs non ramificata; sempre nell'ala posteriore, la venatura anale è singola e non ramificata; sono inoltre visibili lunghe frangiature su tutta la lunghezza del margine esterno. L'accoppiamento alare è di tipo frenato (assente nei maschi), mentre è presente l'apparato di connessione tra ala anteriore e metatorace (spinarea); si può inoltre riscontrare un ponte precoxale.

L'apertura alare è di circa 24–26 mm.

Nelle zampe, gli speroni tibiali hanno formula 0-2-4; i tarsi sono costituiti da cinque tarsomeri, tra cui quello basale risulta molto allungato; unghie e pulvilli appaiono ridotti.

Addome

L'addome è bruno-grigiastro; manca il processo tergosternale sul primo segmento, osservabile di regola negli Adeloidea, caratteristica che viene considerata una riduzione evolutiva secondaria.

L'apparato genitale maschile rivela, su ogni valva, una struttura a pettine detta pectinifer.

Nel genitale femminile, l'ovopositore è ben sviluppato e perforante, al fine di permettere l'inserimento delle uova all'interno dei tessuti della pianta ospite.

Uovo

Le uova, inserite singolarmente nei tessuti della pianta ospite, assumono la forma della "tasca" che le ospita.

Larva

Nel bruco, che possiede un capo prognato, gli stemmata sono completamente assenti, mentre si osservano diverse setole secondarie.

Le zampe toraciche, così come le pseudozampe, appaiono mancanti e sostituite da calli ambulacrali.

Pupa

La pupa, che appare subcilindrica e di un colore tra il giallo ocra e il cannella, è adectica e obtecta; sulla superficie dorsale dei somiti addominali si osservano delle spinule brunastre, disposte senza un ordine apparente.

Biologia

Le larve di C. eremita, che attraversano due stadi di accrescimento, sono responsabili della formazione di cecidi nei tessuti delle piante ospiti.

Periodo di volo

Gli adulti sfarfallano nel mese di aprile.

Distribuzione e habitat

L'areale della specie è esclusivamente neotropicale, e limitato ad una parte del cosiddetto Cono Sud, ossia l'Argentina, l'Uruguay e il sud del Brasile (Stato del Rio Grande do Sul).

L'habitat è rappresentato da boschi e foreste a latifoglie.
