Systematyka
Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1823 roku przyrodnik Joseph Paul Gaimard w artykule zatytułowanym Rozprawa na temat nowego rodzaju Kuraków, opublikowanym w czasopiśmie „Bulletin General et Universel des Annonces et de Nouvelles Scientifiques”. Gatunkiem typowym jest (późniejsze oznaczenie) nogal ciemny (M. freycinet).
Etymologia
- Megapodius: gr. μεγας megas, μεγαλη megalē ‘duży’; ποδιον podion ‘stópka’, od zdrobnienia πους pous, ποδος podos ‘stopa’.
- Alecthelia: gr. αλεκτωρ alektōr, αλεκτορος alektoros ‘kogucik’; ἡλιος hēlios ‘słońce’ (tj. równikowy, tropikalny). Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Alecthelia urvilii Lesson, 1826 (= Megapodius freycinet Gaimard, 1823).
- Amelous: gr. αμελης amelēs ‘niedbały’, od αμελεω ameleō ‘być zaniedbanym’ (w nawiązaniu do wytartego ogona). Nowa nazwa dla Alecthelia.
- Megathelia: gr. μεγας megas, μεγαλη megalē ‘duży’; θηλυς thēlus, θηλεια thēleia ‘samica’. Gatunek typowy (oryginalne oznaczenie): Megapodius tumulus Gould, 1842 (= Megapodius reinwardt C. Dumont, 1823).
