Washington is a city in, and the county seat of, Washington County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 1,071.

History

Washington was created in spring 1860. In 1860, it became the county seat. Until the end of the American Civil War, it was protected by two stockaded buildings, the Washington Company House and Woolbert's Stockade Hotel.

The first post office in Washington was created in November 1861.

Geography

Washington is at 39°N 97°W / 39°N 97°W / 39; -97 (39.816877, -97.052503). The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 1.01 square miles (2.62 km2). Of that, 0.97 square miles (2.51 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 1,071 people, 479 households, and 267 families living in Washington. Of the households, 74.1% owned their home and 25.9% rented their home.

The median age was 42.4 years. Of the people, 90.8% were White, 0.6% were Black, 0.1% were Pacific Islanders, 2.1% were from some other race, and 6.3% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.0% of the people.

2010 census

The 2010 census says that there were 1,131 people, 512 households, and 311 families living in Washington.
