Richard Killeen

Richard John Killeen, ONZM (Auckland, 1946), è un pittore, scultore e artista digitale neozelandese.

Biografia

Killeen si è formato alla Elam School of Fine Arts, Insieme ai suoi contemporanei Robin White e Ian Scott, dove ha avuto come docente Colin McCahon, prima di laurearsi nel 1966. Ha vinto numerosi premi, tra cui la QE2 Arts Fellowship, ed è stato protagonista di diverse importanti mostre. È particolarmente noto per le sue collezioni di “ritagli” di alluminio appesi alle pareti, realizzate a partire dal 1978, e ha continuato a creare composizioni di oggetti in questo stile. Nel 2002, in occasione del Queen's Birthday and Golden Jubilee Honours, è stato nominato Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito della Nuova Zelanda per i servizi resi alla pittura.

Stile

I suoi primi ritagli riflettevano il “malcontento di Killeen per la costrizione causata dai quattro angoli fissi del telaio” e la risposta fu trovata nella loro “presentazione fuori telaio”. Questi ritagli sono creati da modelli in cartone, che l’artista usa per tagliare lamiere di alluminio, laccare e dipingere.

La curatrice del progetto Alexa Johnston spiegò nel catalogo come Killeen avesse permesso alle persone presenti all'inaugurazione del progetto di prendere uno dei pezzi ritagliati e appenderlo dove preferivano sulla parete. L'opera finale, osservò, ‘prese forma gradualmente con il coinvolgimento di un gran numero di persone.
