Wikipedia:Edit filter/Requested

Requested edit filters

This page can be used to request edit filters, or changes to existing filters. Edit filters are primarily used to address common patterns of harmful editing.

Private filters should not be discussed in detail. If you wish to discuss creating an LTA filter, or changing an existing one, please instead email details to wikipedia-en-editfilters@lists.wikimedia.org.

Otherwise, please add a new section at the bottom using the following format:

== Brief description of filter ==
* '''Task''': What is the filter supposed to do? To what pages and editors does it apply?
* '''Reason''': Why is the filter needed?
* '''Diffs''': Diffs of sample edits/cases. If the diffs are revdelled, consider emailing their contents to the mailing list.

"Verity" meme to slang filter

Bungle491 (talk) 17:32, 18 September 2026 (UTC)

I'm looking into this. "verity" is legitimately used in too many articles so it probably won't just be a simple one-word addition to 614. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 18:08, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
Done. Added to 644 (hist · log). Daniel Quinlan (talk) 01:52, 11 October 2026 (UTC)

Casteist spam

From my point of view, a common pattern of these diffs are the hidden edit summaries. Any admin may send me an email about this. Codename Noreste /// ⭐️✨ 00:46, 20 September 2026 (UTC)
That usually happens afterward, right? Sumanuil. (talk to me) 04:17, 1 October 2026 (UTC)

Warn editors when adding thumbnails to infobox

Sumanuil. (talk to me) 04:28, 1 October 2026 (UTC)

@Sumanuil: I'm dubious on this. Obviously I'm not going to pretend that adding a thumbnail to the infobox is great, but a warning filter is generally jarring. How much of a problem is this as opposed to new editors unaware of the MOS? If it's just people not knowing about it, I'm hesitant to use the edit filter as a cudgel for MOS issues. EggRoll97 (talk) 01:40, 11 October 2026 (UTC)
I'm removing thumbnails from infoboxes about twenty times every day, sometimes more. If they're unaware of the MoS, they have to be informed somehow, anyway. Sumanuil. (talk to me) 02:04, 11 October 2026 (UTC)

Disallow edits made through MediaWiki MCP server

sapphaline (talk) 23:45, 4 October 2026 (UTC)

In progress. I'm looking into this now. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 00:08, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
Done. A private filter we have in place seems to be helping, but if this resumes with significant volume, please update this request. It's helpful to include diff links, but please use diff links of the disruptive edits rather than the reverts of those edits. I'm mentioning this because the ANI thread has many of the latter type of diff link. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 23:49, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
They got around again. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Johnstormzand&oldid=1378746649 SuperJames888 (Talk to me) 00:40, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
@Daniel Quinlan I am assuming this is them again. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Jyunichi_Hamada&oldid=1378856976 . At this point it would be nice for a filter to tag any edits related to changing any Archive.Today links so it is easier to catch these edits, probably just for TAs. SuperJames888 (Talk to me) 15:10, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
@SuperJames888: Tagging is an option we've considered. The problem is if we make the filter broad enough to match more than the specific edits, it would be too many edits to tag appropriately. Have there been any more successful edits in the last two hours? Daniel Quinlan (talk) 21:46, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
From what I can see via recent changes, I don't believe I am seeing any new edits, but that doesn't mean they aren't changing how they do the edits as I just have been following patterns. More might slip through the filter, but for right now either it is catching most of them, or they stopped. SuperJames888 (Talk to me) 22:55, 6 October 2026 (UTC)

I'm not sure we need a filter for this specific site's agents, but I'll take a look at whether we could create a more generalized filter. Is Category:Confirmed Wikipedia AI agents up to date? Daniel Quinlan (talk) 15:20, 18 October 2026 (UTC)

AI chatbot communication in HTML comments

Gnomingstuff (talk) 05:51, 25 October 2026 (UTC)

Thanks. The comments are definitely not being missed in working on this. I'm working on a filter for this type of communication in addition to AI disclosures (see this), but it's a complex filter and there are a lot of variations on the theme. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 07:09, 25 October 2026 (UTC)
