Welcome to The Asia-Oceania Destubathon, which will be held from 00:00 (Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) (UTC+00:00)) on Sunday 1 November to 23:59 (GMT) on Monday November 30. It is a general stub elimination contest, sponsored by the Open Knowledge Association (OKA) and in direct support of November's Wikipedia:Asian Month. It is in the vein of the highly successful European Destubathon and Wikipedia:Destubathon of the Americas contests, with the intention to cover all the topics, countries and entities of Asia and Oceania, from Turkey across to the eastern Pacific islands. The idea is simple: Try to have a lot of fun in blasting away as many of our hundreds of thousands of Asian and Oceania stubs as possible! There is £2000 (roughly $2680) available in total in prizes for this. The idea is that editors use their prizes to buy books to help them further contribute to Wikipedia.
All that is required for this is basic stub article expansions and improvements. To "destub" an article all you have to do is ensure it is minimum 1.5kB (1500 characters) of readable prose (excluding infoboxes, references, markup, lists and categories) in total and reasonably well-written, though if there is an abundance of information try to surpass the requirement comfortably. The existing text and text you add is expected to all be verifiable and adequately sourced to reliable sources with the expected citations fully drawn up, while avoiding copyright and paraphrasing. No unverified claims. All entries must comply with the new Large language model (LLM) guidelines–LLMs are now prohibited for use in generating or rewriting article content. Whoever "destubs" the most articles for a given country and topic wins a prize, and whoever has the most "destubs" overall will be crowned the overall winner.
Please make sure you read the rules very carefully if participating!
Measuring tool
The article readable prose, excluding sources and lists, will have to be minimum 1500 bytes (1.5 KB) to comply with the contest.
To measure the article size, please use the Wikipedia:Prosesize gadget. Like most Wikipedia tools, you must be logged in to install or use the gadget. To install it, select it at Preferences→ Gadgets→ Browsing→ Prosesize: add a toolbox link to show the size of and number of words in a page (direct link), and then save. To remove the gadget, disable the gadget in your preferences. If using Vector skins this will appear in the toolbox top right on an article page. If using the old Monobook skin it will appear at the bottom of the box on the left. Click on the page size before starting and when you're finished to gauge how much readable prose you've added and if it complies with the rules.
Scope and prize fund distribution
£2000 (roughly $2680) is being put up by the Open Knowledge Association (OKA), which will be e-vouchers for any Amazon site in the countries it operates in by default unless you have a valid reason why you object to that at the end of the contest, whether it be not having a service in your country or criticism of them etc. In such cases flexibility is offered, but there is a strong emphasis on using your prize to buy books to further improve content. At the end of the contest you will email for your prizes and let us know what country you are in.
